LYNCHBURG, Va. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee women's basketball team scored double-digits points in all four quarters to remain perfect on the season as they defeated Randolph College, 66-43 on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mary Schleusner and Zou Raine opened the scoring for the Generals (12-0, 3-0 ODAC) with baskets on back-to-back possessions. After the WildCats (6-6, 0-3 ODAC) trimmed the lead to one, W&L answered with five unanswered points, highlighted by baskets from Schleusner and Icy Keneah and a free throw from Megan Zimmerman. Raine capped the first quarter with a layup to give the Blue and White a 19-9 advantage.
- The Generals' lead grew to 20 as they opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run. Baskets from Riley Bryant, Elka Prechel, Quinn McGuinness, and Schleusner pushed W&L ahead, 29-9. Randolph responded with an 11-0 run to cut the deficit to nine, but Schleusner answered with a layup and a pair of free throws, while a Sarah Zimmerman free throw sent the Generals into the break with a 13-point lead.
- Out of halftime, the Blue and White extended their advantage to 42-24 after McGuinness intercepted a Maddie Pabon pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup. An ensuing 10-2 scoring stretch gave the Generals a 22-point cushion before Sarah Zimmerman found Schleusner for a basket with 30 seconds remaining, sending W&L into the final quarter with a 54-31 lead.
- Caroline Shimp knocked down a pair of free throws late in the fourth quarter to give the Blue and White their largest lead of the night at 28 points. Bri Shuttlewood followed with a jumper to make it 66-39 before back-to-back baskets from the WildCats closed the scoring, as the Generals secured a 66-43 victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mary Schleusner recorded her 10th double-double of the season, scoring 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field while pulling down 12 rebounds. She also dished out four assists and added three steals and one block. Quinn McGuinness matched Schleusner with three steals and handed out a game-high six assists.
- Sophia Stevens and Taniya Jackson led Randolph with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Maddie Pabon grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added two steals in the loss.
TEAM STATS
- The win extended the Generals' winning streak to 12 games, the second-longest streak in program history and just two victories shy of tying the program record of 14. The victory also marked W&L's seventh straight win over the WildCats, pushing the all-time series lead to 49-14.
- The Generals shot 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the field, including a 46.7 percent mark (7-of-15) in the third quarter. They were strong at the free-throw line, converting 15 of their 19 attempts (78.9%).
- W&L's defense limited Randolph to 22.8 percent shooting from the field and just 11.8 percent from beyond the arc.
- The Blue and White out-rebounded Randolph, 47-32, while both teams committed 21 turnovers. W&L scored 36 points in the paint, with 21 of its 66 points coming off the bench.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- Quinn McGuinness moved into the program's top-10 list for career assists with six on the evening. She passed Bethany Ridenhour '09 and Ansley Miller '00 to move into ninth all-time with 223 career assists.
- Mary Schleusner also climbed the program's record book, moving into fifth all-time in career steals. She surpassed Ansley Miller '00 by recording her 178th career steal in the contest.
