Third Quarter Outburst Propels No. 6 Women’s Basketball Past No. 23 Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. - A 32-point third quarter helped propel the sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team past No. 23 Shenandoah University, 69-52, on Saturday afternoon inside Holekamp Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams traded baskets to open the game, with neither side able to gain more than a two-point advantage. After Addisyn Banks converted a layup to trim the Generals' (13-0, 4-0 ODAC) lead to one, the Blue and White rattled off eight straight points to take an 18-9 advantage, highlighted by three baskets from Mary Schleusner and a layup from Quinn McGuinness. Banks later knocked down one of two free throws to send W&L into the second quarter with an 18-10 lead.
  • Shenandoah (11-2, 3-1 ODAC) scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the deficit to two. W&L responded by pushing the lead back to six as Zou Raine drove the lane for a layup, making it 24-18. Brynna Nesselrodt knocked down a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in the half to pull the Hornets within two, before Schleusner added a free throw to give the Generals a 28-25 lead at the break.
  • The Generals kicked off the third quarter with back-to-back three-pointers from Riley Bryant and Zou Raine to build an eight-point lead. The advantage continued to grow as McGuinness connected on a three-pointer and followed with a layup to make it 47-33. W&L took a 15-point lead with 1:09 remaining in the quarter after Elka Prechel drained a triple, and Schleusner capped the period with a jumper at the buzzer to send the Blue and White into the final frame ahead 60-44.
  • Reagan Smith opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a layup for Shenandoah before both teams went cold, as nearly four and a half minutes passed without a basket. Emily Williams broke the drought by converting one of two free throws to cut the Generals' lead to 15. Schleusner answered with a free throw, and McGuinness followed with a layup to push the lead to 19 before a Williams basket in the final seconds secured a 69-52 win for W&L.
