No. 8 Women’s Basketball Downs No. 7 Emory in Top Ten Clash

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 8/7 Washington and Lee University women's basketball staved off a late comeback from No. 7/8 Emory University to defeat the Eagles 68-63 on Sunday afternoon inside Holekamp Gym.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue and White (11-0) jumped out to an early lead as Riley Bryant opened a 12-2 scoring run with a three-pointer. Mary Schleusner knocked down a deep ball, while Quinn McGuinness added a layup in transition as well. Both teams traded points before a jumper from Chloe Kreusser and a three-pointer from Tatum Olson brought the Eagles (10-1) within five at the end of the first quarter.
  • Alexandra Loucopoulos cut the deficit to three early in the second frame with a triple, but the Generals pushed their lead back to eight as Icy Keneah drove the lane for a layup. Emory continued to chip away at W&L's advantage before a three from Loucopoulos and a layup from Lily Kennedy made it 33-31 in favor of the Blue and White. McGuinness closed the half by finishing off a Sarah Zimmerman assist with a layup, sending the Generals into the break with a four-point lead.
  • Six straight points from McGuinness gave the Blue and White a 42-33 edge early in the third quarter before Sarah Zimmerman gave the Generals their largest lead of the afternoon—10 points—with a layup. The Eagles then held W&L scoreless for two minutes while scoring 10 straight points to tie the game at 51. Schleusner tallied the final points of the quarter with a layup, sending the Generals into the fourth quarter with a 53-51 lead.
  • Emma Starr opened the fourth quarter with a game-tying layup before Riley Allen gave the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon with a three-pointer. McGuinness responded with another triple to put the Generals back in front by two, but a three-point play by Allen tied the game at 59. Elka Prechel connected from beyond the arc to give W&L a 62-59 advantage, and the Blue and White closed the game on a 6-4 run to secure a 68-63 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Quinn McGuinness led all scorers with a career-high 25 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the field and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also dished out a game-high three assists while registering two steals. Mary Schleusner and Sarah Zimmerman both reached double figures, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. Schleusner also grabbed a game-high 21 rebounds.
  • Tatum Olson led Emory with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, connecting twice from three-point range. Alexandra Loucopoulos (15), Chloe Kreusser (11), and Riley Allen (11) also scored in double figures. Kreusser paced the Eagles with 12 rebounds, while Olson, Loucopoulos, and Emma Starr each handed out three assists.
TEAM STATS
  • The win extended the Generals' winning streak to 11 games, the second-longest streak in program history, tying the mark set by the 2023–24 squad from Nov. 26 to Jan. 13. The victory also marked W&L's second straight win over the Eagles, tying the all-time series at two games apiece.
  • W&L is one of eight teams in Division III that remain undefeated on the season, joining Denison, Scranton, Guilford, Wisconsin–Oshkosh, NYU, Johns Hopkins, and Smith. The ODAC is the only conference with two undefeated teams as of Jan. 4.
  • The Generals shot 38.8 percent (23-of-66) from the field, including 41.8 percent in both the second quarter (7-of-17) and third quarter (7-of-17). They connected on 50.0 percent (7-of-14) of their attempts from beyond the arc while making 65.2 percent of their free throws (15-of-23).
  • The Blue and White won the turnover battle, 23-19, and out rebounded the Eagles, 44-41. W&L scored 32 points in the paint and added 22 more off the bench.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
  • Senior Mary Schleusner moved up to No. 8 all-time in steals, moving past Erin Hughes '21 with 175 during her career so far.
