VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan University 64-59 on Saturday morning inside the TowneBank Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Zou Raine scored the first points of the game by going 1-for-2 at the free-throw line before both teams traded baskets through the first media timeout. Mia Alexander of Virginia Wesleyan (11-8, 5-5 ODAC) knocked down a jumper to give the Marlins a three-point lead. Megan Zimmerman answered with a three-pointer with 1:38 remaining to tie the game at 12 before a Maesyn Blaylock jumper sent VWU into the second quarter with a 14-13 lead.
- The Marlins built a seven-point advantage in the second quarter following an 8-0 run that included a three-pointer from Keira Bagwell. The Generals (19-0, 10-0 ODAC) closed the half on a 9-1 run, highlighted by baskets from Sarah Zimmerman, Icy Keneah, and Mary Schleusner, to take a 26-25 lead into the break.
- Quinn McGuinness and Schleusner opened the second half with layups to push the lead to five. After a Bagwell three-pointer tied the game at 30, McGuinness, Sarah Zimmerman, and Schleusner each added baskets to regain a six-point advantage. Another 6-0 run by the Marlins tied the game at 36, but the Blue and White responded with a 9-2 run to take a 45-38 lead. VWU ended the quarter on a 6-2 scoring stretch, sending the Generals into the final period with a four-point edge.
- Virginia Wesleyan took a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter following an 8-2 run, but a Sarah Zimmerman layup sparked an 8-0 run that put W&L back in front, 58-52. The Generals maintained a six-point cushion for much of the remainder of the game until Blaylock converted a three-point play in the closing moments, as W&L secured a 64-59 victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mary Schleusner led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting while grabbing 16 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season. She also added one block and one steal. Icy Keneah dished out a team-high four assists while adding seven points. Sarah Zimmerman recorded four blocks and one steal to go along with seven points and three assists.
- Brianna Long paced the Marlins with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting while pulling down 13 rebounds. Bre Robinson added 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and dished out two assists. Maesyn Blaylock handed out a game-high five assists while recording two steals and nine points.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals extended their winning streak to 19 games with the five-point victory. The win also marked W&L's 13th straight victory over the Marlins and its second win at TowneBank Arena this season.
- The Generals shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field, including a game-high 66.7 percent (8-of-12) in the third quarter. W&L also went 12-of-19 from the free-throw line (63.2%).
- The Blue and White narrowly lost the rebounding battle, 36-35, but committed three fewer turnovers than the Marlins, 13 compared to 16. W&L scored 42 points in the paint and added 16 points off Virginia Wesleyan turnovers.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
- Schleusner moves up to No. 7 all-time in NCAA history in career double-doubles with 85, tying Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford) and Artemis Spanou (Robert Morris).
- With her one steal today, Schleusner ranks third in career steals with 185. Schlesuner is also eight blocked shots away from breaking the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record.
- Sarah Zimmerman moved up to No. 6 all-time in the program record books in blocks, moving past Tonia Dean '98 with 93.
