Schleusner Breaks Division III Double-Doubles Record in 22-Point Win over Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. - Senior Mary Schleusner of the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team highlighted a 22-point win over Roanoke College on Wednesday evening as she reset the NCAA Division III career double-doubles record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (18-0, 9-0 ODAC) jumped out to an early 17-9 lead as Mary Schleusner knocked down a pair of jumpers and Sam Collins added two three-pointers. Both teams traded baskets before Megan Zimmerman and Collins each connected on shots, and Bri Shuttlewood buried a three-pointer to cap a 7-2 run to end the first quarter.
  • Sarah Zimmerman pushed the Generals' lead to 34-19 in the second quarter by converting a pair of free throws and adding a layup. Another 7-2 run by W&L extended the advantage to 17, highlighted by a Schleusner layup and a three-pointer from Quinn McGuinness. The Maroons (7-11, 1-8 ODAC) responded with seven unanswered points to trim the deficit to 10, but just as in the opening quarter, the Generals closed the half on a 7-2 run behind baskets from Icy Keneah and Schleusner, along with a three-pointer from M. Zimmerman.
  • W&L opened the second half with a 9-3 run as S.Zimmerman and McGuinness each knocked down a pair of shots to extend the lead to 21. Abigail Rice of Roanoke completed a three-point play to cut the margin to 18 before McGuinness drained a three-pointer, sending the Generals into the fourth quarter with a 60-39 lead.
  • The fourth quarter featured the lowest scoring of the contest, with just 19 combined points. After a pair of free throws from Rice, the Blue and White rattled off a 9-0 run to build a 26-point lead, highlighted by two baskets from M. Zimmerman and one from Caroline Shimp. Roanoke scored the final four points of the game, but W&L secured a 69-47 victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Schleusner recorded her 16th double-double of the season, scoring 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field while grabbing 20 rebounds. She also added two assists, one block, and one steal. S.Zimmerman and McGuinness both reached double figures in scoring. S. Zimmerman finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, knocked down all four of her free throws, and dished out a team-high four assists. McGuinness added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting while going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Paige Breuer led the Maroons with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field, with all five baskets coming from three-point range. Laila Staples paced Roanoke with five rebounds, while Alicea Farmer and Mariah Cain each handed out a team-high two assists.
TEAM STATS
  • The Generals extended their winning streak to 18 games and remain one of just five undefeated teams in all of Division III. The victory also marked W&L's sixth straight win over the Maroons.
  • The Generals shot 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the field, including a game-high 70.6 percent (12-of-17) in the first quarter. W&L also connected on 41.2 percent (7-of-17) of its attempts from beyond the arc—tied for its second-best mark of the season—while knocking down 10 of 12 free throws (83.3%).
  • The Blue and White dominated the glass, out rebounding Roanoke by 22 boards, 46-24. W&L scored 32 points in the paint, received 29 points from the bench, added 13 points off the Maroons' 19 turnovers, and converted 22 second-chance points.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
  • Schleusner now sits alone at the top of the NCAA Divison III career double-doubles record books as she passed Kathryn Stockbower of Swarthmore and Kelly Williams of Randolph-Macon with 84. She currently ranks ninth among all divisions, tied with Celeste Trahan of Elizabeth City State.
  • Elka Prechel moved up to No. 2 all-time in career games played with 109, moving past Meg Ingram '12 and Kari Ann Pfannenstein '12. Schleusner also moved up to No. 3 all-time in games played with 108 while Quinn McGuinness moved No. 9 all-time with 105.
  • Schleusner moved up to second all-time in career free throws made with 405, surpassing Becca Bolton '12. In addition, she is tied for No. 3 all-time in career steals with 184. Schlesuner is also nine blocked shots away from breaking the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) record.
