Generals topped by Lynchburg at home

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Friday night in a 73-59 final against Lynchburg.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams exchanged scores and kept it within three points for the first 10 minutes of play, until a Bryce Breeden three at the 9:31 mark gave W&L (14-3, 6-2 ODAC) a 23-18 lead. Over the first 12:14 of the game, the Generals made eight shots and the Hornets (10-8, 5-4 ODAC) made seven, with W&L holding a 25-20 advantage.
  • The Hornets proceeded to end the half on 19-5 run, which including three consecutive triples over a two-minute stretch, to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room. They made 6-of-11 shots from the floor, while holding the Generals to 1-of-9.
  • After three minutes passed in the second half, the Hornets scored 11 consecutive points to push their lead up to 22. The Generals responded with an 11-0 run, kickstarted by a Connor Amorosi three, but Lynchburg answered with another run of 10 straight points right after to keep a 21-point advantage.
  • With just seven minutes remaining in the game, Lynchburg's lead was too much for the Generals to overcome. They finished the night out strong, however, making six of their final eight shots to just 2-of-11 for the visitors.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Amorosi paced the W&L offense with 16 points and a team-best nine rebounds. Senior A.J. Thomas and first-year Addison Newkirk both scored nine points, with Newkirk pulling in seven boards and logging two steals.
  • The Hornets were led by Jamarcus Brown, who tallied 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Jayson Easton followed with 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc.
  • Piercen Young and Jake Hart rounded out Lynchburg's top scorers with 12 and 10, respectively. Young joined Brown with 11 rebounds, while Hart had four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals shot 32.2 percent (19-59) from the field on the night and 75 percent (15-20) at the free throw line. Lynchburg had the upper hand on field goal shooting at 40.7 percent (24-59), and made 11 threes to just six for W&L.
  • W&L was the better rebounding team, finishing the game with a 44-34 advantage in total rebounds and 12-10 in offensive boards. Second-chance points favored the Hornets, however, 8-6.
  • The Generals committed 10 turnovers and forced 12, but it was the first time in 12 games W&L lost a game in which it committed fewer turnovers than its opponent.
  • W&L held additional scoring advantages in points off turnovers (9-7), bench points (24-8) and points in the paint (26-22).

The Generals will be back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Averett for a 7:00 p.m. start against the Cougars.
