No. 6 Women’s Basketball Wins 15th Straight, Routs RMC 72-54

ASHLAND, Va. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team secured their 15th-straight win, the longest winning streak in program history, in a 72-54 rout of Randolph-Macon College on Saturday in Ashland.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sarah Zimmerman opened the scoring with a layup, but Randolph-Macon (10-5, 4-2 ODAC) built a four-point advantage a few minutes later after Sam Smith knocked down back-to-back three-pointers. The Generals (15-0, 6-0 ODAC) responded to take a 12-10 lead after Caroline Shimp converted a pair of free throws. Another triple from Smith put the Yellow Jackets back in front by three before Zou Raine answered with a layup at the buzzer, sending RMC into the second quarter with a one-point edge.
  • The Yellow Jackets maintained a three-point lead early in the second quarter as Liz Wyrick tipped in a missed layup. Both teams traded baskets before Megan Zimmerman buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 28. The Blue and White then took control, building an eight-point lead as Icy Keneah and Sam Collins knocked down jumpers. Emoin Byers scored with 39 seconds remaining to send W&L into halftime with a 38-32 lead.
  • W&L extended its advantage to 11 points coming out of the break as Zou Raine connected on a jumper and Sarah Zimmerman followed with a three-pointer. Back-to-back layups from Quinn McGuinness and Raine pushed the Generals' lead to 47-34 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets as W&L maintained a double-digit lead until Randolph-Macon used a 6-0 run to cut the margin to seven. Mary Schleusner answered with a bucket before Erin Porter converted a jumper, sending the Generals into the fourth quarter with a 55-48 lead.
  • McKenzie Matheny opened the final period with a layup to trim the W&L lead to five, but the Generals responded with seven straight points from Schleusner and Sarah Zimmerman to rebuild a 12-point advantage. Randolph-Macon scored on two straight possessions before being held scoreless the rest of the quarter, as W&L pulled away for a 72-54 victory.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Schleusner led all scorers with 24 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field while knocking down 10 of her 11 free throws. She also pulled down 17 rebounds, dished out four assists, and recorded one block. Icy Keneah (11) and Sarah Zimmerman (10) also reached double figures in scoring, with Zimmerman adding eight rebounds and three assists.
  • McKenzie Matheny led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points on 7-of-15 shooting while adding eight rebounds, one block, and one steal. Sam Smith followed with 13 points and dished out a game-high four assists, while Liz Wyrick also reached double figures with 10 points.
TEAM STATS
  • The Generals' 15th straight win marked the longest winning streak in program history, surpassing the 2023–24 team's streak of 14 that spanned from Jan. 20 to March 8, 2024. The victory also snapped a two-game skid against the Yellow Jackets, marking W&L's first win over Randolph-Macon since Feb. 10, 2024.
  • The Generals shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field, including a game-high 50.0 percent (6-of-12) in the second quarter. W&L also knocked down 21 of its 25 free throws (84.0%).
  • The Blue and White out rebounded Randolph-Macon, 46-41, while scoring 30 points in the paint. W&L added 10 points off the Yellow Jackets' seven turnovers and received 27 points from the bench.
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
  • With her 17 rebounds this afternoon, Mary Schleusner is just 20 rebounds shy of becoming the all-time leading rebounder in Division III history. She also is three double-doubles shy of breaking the NCAA record of 83.
