FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 4 Washington and Lee men's soccer team was topped by a 2-1 score on the road at Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- All three goals occurred in the first half, including one from each team in the opening seven minutes. The Eagles (3-1) struck first at the 2:08 mark when offensive pressure in the W&L goal box forced a turnover. Elliot Berg had the initial pressure before he found Sammy Amorose for the goal inside the six.
- The Generals (0-2-2) had a quick response, however, as senior Buster Couhig buried a penalty kick four minutes later. Coming off a corner taken by senior Willy Hall, junior Matthew Jenkins redirected the ball goalward before a handball from near the goal line was called. Couhig then scored with ease to the right post.
- The Eagles regained a one-goal lead in the 32nd minute when Sammy Amorose took a shot from just right of center at the top of the box. His attempt banged off the left post, where Mason Landreth was there for the rebound and put-back goal.
- After being outshot, 11-5, in the first half, W&L flipped the pressure onto the Eagles in the second half with a 9-3 shot advantage. Three of the Generals' nine attempts ended on goal, but UMW's Tristan Kickbush made each save, including his final stop in the 88th minute.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Amorose had a game-high three points on a goal and an assist for the Eagles. He also tallied a game-best five shots and put four on goal.
- Couhig's goal was his first of the season, and he took two shots. First-year Sami Seife provided a solid effort in 50 minutes off the bench with four shots and two on goal.
- Kickbush finished the game with six saves to pick up the win, while W&L sophomore keeper Miles Furman made three saves. Both goalies played all 90 minutes.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals' 9-3 shot advantage in the second half helped them match the Eagles shot total for the game at 14 per side. W&L took four corner kicks to three for the hosts and put seven shots on goal compared to five for UMW.
