Ryan Sharpe netted a late first-half goal, while junior
Miles Furman posted his second straight clean sheet to propel the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Johns Hopkins on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With time winding down in the first half, senior Jack Travis took a shot from the right side that hit the hand of a Blue Jays (1-1-1) defender inside the box. The ensuing penalty kick was taken by Sharpe who calmy slotted the ball into the low-left corner.
- Both teams had scoring opportunities on additional penalty kicks in the game. JHU goalie John Ghanem made a save on a W&L (2-1) penalty taken in the 22nd minute, before Jacob Sardinha missed a penalty kick to the left in the 53rd minute which would have tied the game.
- The Generals controlled the offensive chances in the first half with five shot attempts to two for the Blue Jays, before the hosts held a 9-2 edge in shots in the second half.
- Furman came up big for the Generals with five saves in the second half to keep the Blue Jays off the board, including two in the final three minutes and an acrobatic stop in the 74th minute.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sharpe's goal was his first of the season and fourth of his career. Travis led the offense with two shot attempts.
- Guilian Laudisa paced the Johns Hopkins offense with three shots and two attempts on goal. Brendan Listzwan also put two shot attempts on goal.
- Furman finished the game with six saves to record his second consecutive clean sheet and third of his career. His six saves marked a new career high.
- Ghanem ended the day with two saves across the 90 minutes of play.
TEAM STATS:
- The Blue Jays took 11 shots on the day and put six on goal, while the Generals notched seven shot attempts and four on goal. That included a JHU team save in the 23rd minute on a shot taken by W&L senior Anthony Careccia.
- Five corner kicks were taken in the game, four of which came in the second half. Johns Hopkins took three and conceded two.

The Generals will be back in action for a pair of games in Lookout Mountain, Ga., next weekend, starting with a 5:30 p.m. kick-off on Friday against Covenant.
