LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – An early goal from first-year
Rowan Sellers, plus a strong effort from the Washington and Lee defense, pushed Men's Soccer to a 1-0 win on Friday night at Covenant.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (3-1) wasted little time in making their mark on the scoreboard, as Sellers found the back of the net in just the fourth minute. A pass in from the top of the box from junior Ricardo Sanchez was quickly centered towards Sellers by sophomore Isaac Arrowood. Sellers then slid for the score from inside the six.
- W&L junior keeper Miles Furman was also tested early, but came away with the ball in traffic in the box on a dangerous offensive chance for the Scots in the ninth minute.
- The Generals sought to double their lead in the 25th minute as Sanchez put a strong header on goal. Covenant keeper J.T. Tolson made the quick-reaction save though from close range to keep it a one-goal game.
- In the later stages of the second half, Sellers nearly netted his first collegiate brace with an off-balanced shot on the left side. Testing the abilities of Tolson once again, Tolson dove for the stop and caught the ensuing corner cross to end the threat.
- In another impressive defensive showing, the Generals did not allow a shot on goal across the 90 minutes to record their third straight shutout.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sellers led the offense with the first goal of his college career. He also paced the W&L attack with three shot attempts, putting all three on goal.
- Senior Spencer Furman tied Sellers atop the team leaderboard with three shots, while Arrowood and junior Justin Ceccanecchio had two shots each. Arrowood and Sanchez also had an assist each on Sellers' goal.
- Jackson Bostrom was the lone Covenant player with two shots for the Scots' offense. He and four other players combined for the team's six shots.
- Miles Furman was credited with his third straight clean sheet, while Tolson made six saves in the Covenant goal.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Friday's final marked the first time the W&L men's soccer program has posted three shutouts inside its first four games of a season since 2019. The team has allowed just one goal in its four games so far this season, a program best.
- Miles Furman and the W&L defense extended their consecutive shutout minutes streak to 274:04.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Scots, 13-6, on the night including 8-3 in the first half. The also held Covenant without a shot attempt over the final 17:27 of the game.
- Eight corner kicks were taken in the game, all by the Generals.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back in action at Scotland Yard on Saturday when they take on Maryville (Tenn.) at 2:00 p.m.
