LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored three times in the first half to power their way to a 3-2 win over Maryville (Tenn.) on Saturday to close out their weekend road trip.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Generals (4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when senior Nati Seife found senior Jack Travis inside the box for the game's first goal.
- Late in the first half, W&L struck for two more goals within 2:40 of each other to build a strong 3-0 lead. First-year Griffin Jenkins found the back of the net from junior Ryan Sharpe in the 38th minute, before sophomore Mac Couhig scored following a long through ball up the field from sophomore Sami Seife.
- The Scots (0-2-3) got one goal back in the 51st minute when Ryan Buie assisted Ben Brophy. Buie later got Maryville back within a goal with 47 seconds left in regulation.
- Despite the two second-half goals, the W&L defense held strongly to seal the team's fourth straight win. Buie's 90th-minute goal was the team's only shot attempt inside the final 29:53.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Travis, Jenkins and Couhig each scored their first goals of the season to lead the way for the W&L offense. Sharpe and the Seife brothers all had an assist as well.
- Junior Justin Ceccanecchio led W&L with five shot attempts and first-year Baber Toure had three shots. The Generals totaled six shots on goal as a team.
- Buie was the top offensive player for the Scots with a goal, and an assist on Brophy's goal. He and Brophy led the Maryville offense with two shots each.
- Tanner Ricks played all 90 minutes in the Maryville goal and ended the game with three saves. Junior Miles Furman and senior Parker Smith played one half each in goal for the Generals.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Generals are off to their best start in four seasons with four wins in their first five games. The 2022 campaign also got off to a 4-1 start with an opening loss followed by four straight wins.
- W&L improved to 10-2 all-time against Maryville in men's soccer with Saturday's result. The Generals have now won three straight against the Scots with their last loss coming on September 11, 1994.
TEAM STATS:
- The W&L offense gave the Scots all it could handle in the first half, as the Generals outshot Maryville, 18-0, in the opening frame. The final shot margin finished at 27-5.
- The Blue and White took eight corner kicks in the game, including five in the second half, and conceded three.

The Generals will return to the pitch next Saturday, September 19, when they host Mary Washington at 3:30 p.m.
