LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior
Ricardo Sanchez and first-year
Rowan Sellers both scored two goals to lead the No. 23 Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 5-0 win over No. 13 Mary Washington on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After both teams needed some time to find a rhythm, Sanchez gave the Generals (5-1) a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute on a centering pass from sophomore Sami Seife.
- Sellers then got on the board in the 27th minute. Senior Matthew Jenkins battled for possession on the near side with a defender, before he got a pass off to Sellers in the middle. Sellers dribbled into the box and found space for a left-footed score.
- Sellers wasted little time into the second half to extend the W&L lead to three, as Sanchez hit a pass off the outside of his left foot and into the box for Sellers to finish into the top-right corner.
- Jenkins then added his second assist of the day on Sanchez's second goal, as he split a pair of defenders on a run into the box and centered to Sanchez for the tap-in goal in the 53rd minute.
- First-year Julien Goldstein-Muehlenweg put an exclamation mark on the Generals' win with his first collegiate goal in the 85th minute. He one-timed a volley inside the left post after a centering pass from first-year Taylor Jenkins was lofted into the air by a defender.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sanchez led the Generals with a career-high five points on two goals and an assist in what was his first career multi-goal game. Sellers logged his first collegiate brace and now has three goals in his last three games.
- Jenkins had his first career multi-assist game, while Seife contributed his second assist of the season on Sanchez's first goal.
- Junior goalkeeper Miles Furman was required to make just one save en route to his fourth clean sheet of the season, a stop in the 32nd minute in which he comfortably caught the ball.
- The W&L defense, led by the strong play of senior Spencer Furman, allowed just two shots all game which came in the 32nd and 78th minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Through six games this season, Sellers and Sanchez are tied atop the team leaderboard with six points each. Sellers has three goals, while Sanchez has two goals and two assists.
- The Generals extended their lead against the Eagles in the all-time head-to-head to 10-8-1. It was their most goals scored ever against UMW and it was the largest win by either team in the all-time series.
- With the shutout, Miles Furman extended his personal consecutive shutout minutes streak to 409:04. Not only is that a career long, but it is also the seventh longest in program history.
TEAM STATS:
- The Generals outshot the Eagles, 16-2, including 10-1 in the second half. Nine of the Generals' shot attempts ended up on goal.
- Five corner kicks were taken in the game, three by W&L. Mary Washington took the only corner kick of the second half.

The Generals will return to the pitch next Saturday, September 26, when they get their first taste of ODAC play for the 2026 season at 6:00 p.m. at Eastern Mennonite.
