LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team conceded the only goal of the game in the 86th minute, as the 14th-ranked University of Lynchburg got the 1-0 win over the Generals in Tuesday night's season opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the waning minutes of the season opener, the Hornets (1-0) began to use sharp passing to move the ball up the field. A centering pass then found Saul Lopez Coreas, who left a pass off to his right for Izaack Cruz. Cruz took a controlling touch back to his left and curled a strong shot inside the left post for the lead with 4:04 left.
- With the Hornets now packed in on defense and the Generals threatening to even the score, W&L got a free kick to the right of the Lynchburg goal box with 8.8 seconds remaining when senior Matthew Jenkins drew a foul.
- Senior Anthony Careccia stepped up for the ensuing crossing pass and lofted ball towards the back post, but his attempt was too high for the leaping tries of his teammates and went out for a goal kick as the final seconds came off the board.
- Despite being outshot by the Hornets in total attempts, the Generals managed five shots on goal, including three in the second half. Two came just 30 seconds apart in the 60th minute from sophomore Isaac Arrowood and first-year Baber Toure, but Lynchburg keeper Vikram Couto was there for the stops on each occasion.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Eight different Generals combined for the team's nine shots on the night, with junior Ricardo Sanchez getting two shots off. Sanchez, Arrowood, Toure, Careccia and sophomore Sami Seife each had one shot on goal for W&L.
- Cruz's goal came on his only shot attempt of the night. Lopez Coreas got the assist on the score.
- Matthew Viscuso led the Hornets' offense with four shots, while Jefferson Lopez Coreas had two.
- Couto saved five shots to collect the clean sheet. Junior Miles Furman saved two shots in the W&L goal across the duration of the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Tuesday's result marked the fourth in the last five meetings between the Generals and Hornets to be decided by a goal or less.
- The 2026 season opener also went down as a rare September meeting between the two schools in men's soccer. The last time W&L and Lynchburg played before October was a 2-1 W&L win on September 11, 2021.
- Tuesday's game will not count towards either team's ODAC standings. Their conference matchup will come in the Hill City on October 17.
TEAM STATS:
- The Hornets took six shots in both halves to finish with their 12, while the Generals took nine shots on the night. They got five attempts off in the first half before taking four in the second.
- Corners kicks were about even, with the Generals holding the slight 4-3 edge. Both teams took two corner kicks in the second half.
