Generals and No. 19 Catholic reach stalemate in nation's capital

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team posted its third draw of the season on Saturday afternoon in a 1-1 final at 19th-ranked Catholic University of America.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (0-2-3) broke through on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute on a penalty kick goal from senior Willy Hall. Sophomore Ricardo Sanchez drew a foul in the box to set up the PK, as he was racing for the loose ball. Hall then slotted his shot inside the right post for the score.
  • The Cardinals (3-0-1) equalized in the 24th minute courtesy of a score from Holden Woodings. Azaria Tewodros received a pass at the 18 from near midfield. With his back to goal, Tewodros laid a pass off to Woodings who took a controlling touch before finding the inside of the side netting at the right post.
  • That capped the scoring in the game, but the Cardinals possessed most of the chances after they tied the score. They took nine shots in the second half and forced W&L sophomore goalkeeper Miles Furman to make four saves, plus an additional team defensive save for the Generals.
  • W&L nearly scraped together a second goal with a pair of chances inside the final four minutes, but a diving save from Owen Allegro in the 86th minute and another stop right at the left post in the 87th minute kept the game tied.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Hall's goal was his first of the season and it was also his only shot attempt of the game.
  • Woodings led all players with seven total attempts and four on goal, while Tewodros got the assist on Woodings' score.
  • CUA's Christian Backich and W&L's Kaden Zion were the only other players with multiple shots on the game, each taking two.
  • Furman and Allegro both played all 90 minutes in goal on Saturday. Allegro's two late saves were his only stops in the game, while Furman finished with four saves.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Cardinals finished the game with a 14-6 shot advantage, including 6-3 in shots on goal. All seven combined saves in the game came in the second half.
  • W&L earned five corner kicks, four coming in the first half, and conceded three.
