LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 13 Washington and Lee women's soccer team bounced back from its first loss of the season last weekend with a 1-0 victory at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Senior Sarah Zimmerman was responsible for the game's only goal in the 53rd minute. After sophomore Megan Zimmerman left a pass off, Sarah picked up the ball, spun away from a defender and scored from 20 yards out with her left foot.
- Junior Shay Bowman nearly doubled the W&L (2-1) lead two minutes later, but her attempt was saved by F&M (2-1) keeper Lucy Fleming.
- W&L sophomore goalkeeper Kate McEnroe made two saves in the second half to keep her side ahead, including her final save of the game which came in the 88th minute.
- The Generals limited the Diplomats' chances even more in the first half, allowing just two shots in the opening 45 minutes. The Blue and White outshot F&M in both halves.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sarah Zimmerman's goal was her second of the season, while her sister Megan picked up her first assist of the year on the play.
- S. Zimmerman led all players with five shots on the day and three on goal. Megan and Elizabeth Zimmerman both took two shots and put one on goal.
- Seven different F&M players took one shot each for the team's seven attempts. Fleming finished the day with six saves across the 90 minutes of action.
- McEnroe got her first collegiate shutout by making four saves, two in each half.
TEAM STATS:
- W&L outshot the Diplomats by a final total of 13-7, including 7-4 in shots on goal. The Generals held the edge at halftime, 6-2, before taking seven of the game's 12 shots in the second half.
- The Generals also blanked the Diplomats in corner kicks while taking nine themselves.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will have a quick turnaround as they return to action on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. for the home opener against fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins.
