No. 13 Generals topple No. 5 Johns Hopkins in home opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – One goal each from junior Amelia Manke and senior Helen Otteni propelled the No. 13 Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game remained scoreless through just under 30 minutes of play, with the Generals (3-1) holding the decided advantage in early pressure, with six shot attempts to one.
  • In the 30th minute, senior Bryn Bissinger sent a corner kick cross towards the back post. Senior Sarah Zimmerman redirected the ball back towards the middle of the six, where Manke got a right-footed shot off to beat the keeper for the 1-0 lead.
  • In the 57th minute, sophomore Megan Zimmerman found herself in space on the right side in the Johns Hopkins (2-2-1) defensive third. Zimmerman spotted Otteni in the box and let a cross fly, where Otteni met the pass on the left side and scored to double the W&L lead.
  • The Blue Jays controlled the offensive chances over the final 34 minutes with a 9-2 shot margin. They then got back within a goal in the 69th minute when Caroline Marcus slipped a pass through to Carolyn Johnson in the box, where Johnson scored inside the left post.
  • Sophomore Kate McEnroe stepped up in a big way for the Blue and White, particularly in the second half. McEnroe made seven saves across the final 45 minutes, including six in the final 34 minutes, to prevent further damage.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Manke notched her first goal of the season in the 30th minute, while Otteni's tally in the 57th was her second of the year. Bissinger and Sarah Zimmerman both assisted on the Manke goal, while Megan Zimmerman got the helper on the Otteni score.
  • Johnson was the game leader in shot attempts with four, including her goal in the 69th minute. Marcus took one shot in the game to go with her assist.
  • McEnroe earned the win in goal for the Generals with her seven saves. She has posted at least four saves in all four games this season. Sunday was her second game of the season with at least seven stops.
  • JHU goalkeeper Ella Kruntchev played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals held the shot advantage by halftime, 7-2, but the Blue Jays finished with more in the game (14-10) after a 12-3 margin in the second half.
  • Both teams took two corners on the day, Johns Hopkins with one in each half and the Generals with both in the first.
