Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 W&L pushes past SVU for fourth win in five fixtures

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Bryn Bissinger scored a wondrous goal in the seventh minute of action to lead the No. 15 Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win against Southern Virginia on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Bissinger goal came off a free kick after an SVU (0-3-1) foul on the left side. Senior Sydney Devory played the ball short where Bissinger laced a shot from 30 yards out and into the top-right corner of the frame.
  • The Generals (4-1) kept the Knights on their toes throughout the night with 40 total shot attempts and 15 on goal. The next major threat against the Knights came in the 27th minute when sophomore Aubrey Dunbar put a shot off the center of the crossbar from the top of the 18.
  • Senior Sarah Zimmerman also had a good first-half look at the goal on a header in space inside the box in the 34th minute. Aiming for the back post, Zimmerman pushed her attempt just wide left.
  • Despite no goals in the second half, the Generals kept the pressure up with 22 shot attempts and nine on goal, in addition to seven corner kicks. Knights' goalkeeper Beth Manwill was up to the task, however, as she made nine saves in the second half alone.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Bissinger's goal was her first of the season and fourth of her career. She took two shots on the night and put both on goal, while Devory was credited with her first assist of the season on the score.
  • Zimmerman led the Generals with eight shots in the game, with sophomores Elizabeth Zimmerman and Megan Zimmerman combining for another 11 attempts. Senior Helen Otteni added an additional five shots.
  • Five different SVU players took one shot each, with only Estee Schneider getting a shot on goal.
  • Sophomore Kate McEnroe made the one save required for the clean sheet on Friday night, her second of the season. Manwill ended the game with 14 saves.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Generals have now won 18 consecutive home games and are undefeated in their last 23 games (20-0-3) played on Watt Field.
TEAM STATS:
  • W&L owned a 40-5 advantage in total shot attempts, split up by 18-2 in the first half and 22-3 in the second.
  • The Blue and White earned 12 corners kicks and conceded one in each half.
