Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 15 Generals tripped up by No. 5 Emory in North Carolina

CARY, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle against No. 5 Emory, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at First Horizon Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After the Eagles (6-0) increased their offensive pressure 20 minutes into the second half, Emory Bozzuti was finally able to finish a chance for the Eagles. Emory earned a free kick near midfield, where Madison Teng sent the ball into the box. Bozzuti met the long pass with her head and placed it inside the right post.
  • In the time leading up to the Emory goal, W&L (4-2) sophomore goalkeeper Kate McEnroe made saves in the 64th and 68th minutes to keep the game scoreless. Her second save was her top stop of the game, as Kaitlyn Nimmer tried to put the ball through McEnroe's legs. The ball got slightly behind McEnroe, who quickly jumped back toward the goal and on top of the ball to end the chance.
  • The Generals forced Emory keeper Sophia Garcia into two second-half saves and an additional stop in the first half. Senior Sydney Devory nearly put the Generals a goal up in the 23rd minute with a well-place shot from outside, but Garcia made a diving save in the top right corner.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Bozzuti's goal came on one of her two shot attempts in the game, as she played 43 minutes off the Emory bench.
  • Nimmer paced all players with six attempts and five on goal, followed by another five shots from Mikayla Camp.
  • McEnroe played all 90 minutes in the W&L goal and made eight saves, including six in the second half.
TEAM STATS:
  • After shot attempts were tied, 3-3, at halftime, Emory outshot the Generals, 15-6, in the second half to finish with an 18-9 advantage.
  • Both teams took three corner kicks apiece on the day.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 20, when they host third-ranked Christopher Newport at 12:00 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the regular season.
