FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team closed out its 2025 ITA Regional Championship run on Sunday with a main draw quarterfinal appearance and a handful of wins in consolation play.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY 2:
- Senior Grace Lorenz and sophomore Sarah Donnelly were the lone Generals left in either of the championship brackets, and they opened with a win in the doubles Round of 16 over ninth-seeded Kendal Chang and Samantha Robertson (Christopher Newport).
- Lorenz and Donnelly then fell, however, in the quarterfinals to the No. 2-seeded team of Lia Melvin and Jay Xiao of Johns Hopkins.
- In the consolation doubles bracket, senior Isabella Custard and first-year Sarah Ladd ended their tournament on a high note, with a bye, a walkover and an 8-5 win against Gabriella Mazzeo and Arina Zhelyaskova (Gettsyburg).
- Ladd and classmate Margarette Berdy also had strong consolation runs in singles play. Both players won in the consolation Rounds of 32 and 16, and neither of their matches were in doubt for the first-year Generals. Ladd logged 8-3 and 8-5 wins, while Berdy recorded 8-3 and 8-1 victories.
- Alternate draws were also in action for the first time on the weekend, with sophomore Mary Kate Kahl winning in the B1 Round of 16 and quarterfinals, before falling in the semifinal round.
UP NEXT:
The Generals will close out their fall competition schedule next Saturday, October 4, when they host Asbury and Virginia Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively, as part of the W&L Fall Festival.
