W&L Baseball’s Thornton Named NCAA Statistical Champion

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Rising Junior Andrew Thornton of the Washington and Lee University baseball team was named the statistical champion for doubles per game following an impressive sophomore campaign.

Thornton, a Houston, Texas native, started all 30 games for the Blue and White at third base. He led the team with 46 hits and 18 doubles, adding one triple and pair of home runs while producing a team-leading batting average of .368. Thornton also paced the team with a .576 slugging percentage and ranked second with a .998 OPS.


Nationally, Thornton ranked 25th in Division III and third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in doubles, while leading the nation in doubles per game with 0.60. He recorded four games with two or more doubles, including a standout performance against Guilford on March 29, when he went 4-for-6 with three doubles and six RBI to lead the Generals to a 14-7 win.


He led the team with 17 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games, and he posted the team's third-longest hitting streak at 10 games.
