No. 2 W&L Men’s Golf Wins Capital City Classic, McEwen Captures Fourth Individual Title

4/8/2025 7:57:00 PM

PRATTVILLE, Ala. – On the tournament's second day, the Washington and Lee University men's golf team delivered a historic performance at the Capital City Classic, firing a two-round total of 561 (-15) to win the tournament by 13 strokes at RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill (Par 72, 7,243 yards).

Originally scheduled as a 54-hole event, the tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to flooding and severe weather that impacted the region over the weekend. Monday's opening round was delayed until 11 a.m. CT due to saturated course conditions, wiping out the day's second round, with players battling wind, rain, and cold temperatures. Despite the limited preparation and difficult setup, the No. 2 Generals emerged with a dominant team performance and their third tournament win of the season, matching the program record set in 2001-02 and 2004-05.

W&L's 561 (-15) marked the lowest 36-hole team score to par in program history, and all five Generals finished inside the top 25.

Final Top 5 Team Standings:

  • No. 2 Washington and Lee – 287-274—561 (-15)

Individual Highlights:

  • Sophomore Jonathan McEwen continued his remarkable season, winning his fourth individual title of the year, the most by a player in program history. He shot 69-65—134 (-10), matching the lowest 36-hole score to par in program history. McEwen was under par on par 3s (2.75), par 4s (3.80), and par 5s (4.50) and finished with 25 pars and nine birdies. The nation's top-ranked player opened Monday with a flawless scorecard and somehow outdid himself on Tuesday, starting with a birdie on his first hole. After a bogey and two more birdies on the front nine, he went five-under on the back, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 17th—one of six eagles recorded on that hole.
  • Senior Elias Malakoff surged with a 4-under 68 on Tuesday to finish T-5th at 72-68—140 (-4). He tallied six birdies in the final round, including four on the back nine, and led the team in total birdies (10). Malakoff was -6 on par 5s (4.25 avg.), the best in the field.
  • First-year Timothy Kaufman placed 10th at 73-70—143 (-1). He improved by three strokes in the final round, posting four birdies on the day and closing with a birdie on Hole 1. Kaufman finished 2-under on par 4s (3.90 avg.) and even on par 5s.
  • Senior Will Braxton was steady throughout the tournament, finishing T-11th at 73-71—144 (E). He led the Generals with 28 pars and finished even on par 4s and 1-under on par 5s (4.88 avg.).
  • First-year Charlie Krasnewich recorded the biggest jump of any General, improving from a 75 to an even-par 72 to finish T-24th at +3 overall. His front nine featured three birdies and six pars, and he chipped in two more birdies on the back despite a tough mid-round stretch.

Program Notes:

  • W&L's third team title of the season matches the program record for most wins in a year (also achieved in 2001-02 and 2004-05).
  • McEwen's four individual titles this season surpass the previous single-season record of three, set by Brian Peccie in 2018-19.
  • McEwen's 10-under scorecard tied the program record for the lowest 36-hole score to par, while his 7-under 65 in the second round stands as the second-lowest individual round in program history.
  • W&L shattered its previous 36-hole tournament scoring record by 10 strokes, surpassing the mark set at the 2022-23 Royal Lakes Invitational.
  • This marks the sixth top-five team finish for the Generals in 2024-25.
