No. 5 Men’s Golf Leads ODAC Championship after 18 Holes, Three Generals Sit in Top Ten

AMHERST, Va.  - Battling blistering winds during a five-hour round, the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team is in first place following the first round of the 2026 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship at Poplar Grove Golf Club while three Generals are sitting in the top ten individually.

The field played a Par 72 with a yardage of 7,082 yards in the the first round of the tournament, playing to an average score of 80.04 while only one player,  Brayden Tritsch of Virginia Wesleyan, played under par this afternoon. The Blue and White currently lead the ten team field after 18 holes at 16-over par. 17th-ranked University of Lynchburg sits one shot behind W&L at 17-over par while 45th-ranked Hampden-Sydney sits in third with a score of 22-over par. No. 39 Guilford sits one shot behind the Tigers at +23 while Randolph-Macon rounded out the top five with a score of 27-over par. 

W&L played the front nine to a score of seven-over par with six birdies, including three on Hole 3, a 570-yard Par 5, 18 pars and an eagle from Jonathan McEwen on Hole 6.  They shot a nine-over par on the back with seven birdies and 15 pars.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • No. 1-ranked Jonathan McEwen sits in a tie for third place after carding a one-over par 73 in the first round of action. On the front nine, McEwen shot even par with a pair of birdies and an eagle on the 564-yard par-5 sixth hole—the only eagle of round one—while adding three pars. He shot one-over on the back nine with two birdies and five pars.
  • Tim Kaufman, the ninth-ranked golfer in Division III,  sits in a tie for fifth place after shooting a 74 (+2) this afternoon. After a bogey on the first hole, Kaufman bounced back with two straight birdies before rattling off six consecutive pars to shoot one-under on the front nine. He carded two pars and a pair of birdies, including one on the 18th hole to shoot two-over on the back nine.
  • Charlie Krasnewich is the third General in the top 10, finishing the first day with a score of four-over par (76). He shot three-over on the front nine with five pars and a birdie on hole six, a 564-yard Par 5, before bouncing back with a one-over performance on the back nine, recording three birdies and two pars, including two birdies in a three-hole stretch.
  • William Hull sits in a tie for 28th place after the first round with a score of nine-over par (81). He carded four pars and a birdie on hole three (570-yard par 5) to shoot five-over on the front nine. Hull followed with a four-over back nine, tallying six pars, including five over his final six holes.
  • Turner Edwards rounds out the Generals in a tie for 40th place after shooting an 84 (+12). Edwards shot five-over on the front nine with three pars and a birdie on the seventh hole. He added three pars and a birdie on hole 16 on the back nine to finish at seven-over on that side.
