No. 28 W&L rallies in singles to upend Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – After dropping the doubles point, the 28th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team overpowered Averett in singles play to grab a 4-2 win on Sunday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The doubles point came down to the final match after the Generals (10-4, 6-0 ODAC) and Cougars (10-4, 5-1 ODAC) split at Nos. 1 and 3. At No. 2, Brenda Poulakidas and Ravaka Ramanantoanina pulled out a 6-3 win over first-years Sarah Donnelly and Allie Murrell for the lead heading to singles.

The Generals quickly moved out to a 3-1 lead with straight-set wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 4. Donnelly rebounded from doubles for a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4, before junior Lauren Long was a 6-2, 6-1 victor at No. 1. Junior Grace Lorenz then put W&L one point away from the win with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 3.

Averett went down fighting, however, and got an extra point out of Siddhi Khandelwal at No. 2, who battled back from dropping the first set, 6-0, against Murrell to win the next two each by a 6-4 score. The match then ended when W&L junior Riho Iijima secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Annika Kellerer at No. 6.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will head into a two-week break from match play before returning to action on Monday, April 21, when they will split the squad for matches against Roanoke and Hollins. The Roanoke match will be played at 4:00 p.m. on the home courts, with a 4:30 start at Hollins.
