No. 34 W&L's winning streak halted at nine at No. 12 Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 34 Washington and Lee women's tennis team had its nine-match winning streak snapped at No. 12 Johns Hopkins on Sunday, 5-2, to close out regular season play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Doubles favored the Blue Jays (11-7), as the hosts won at No. 3 and No. 2 to clinch the point, before notching a win at No. 1 for the sweep. Juniors Lauren Long and Riho Iijima lost by a 6-1 score at No. 3, and juniors Isabella Custard and Annie Jennings fell by the same score at No. 2 against the 12th-ranked team of Ava Li and Kamila Wong. The 20th-ranked doubles tandem of Lia Melvin and Jay Xiao then earned a 6-3 win at the top spot over first-years Sarah Donnelly and Allie Murrell.

The Blue Jays clinched the match with straight-set wins at Nos. 5, 2 and 6, while singles matches 1, 3 and 4 all went to three sets. Sahana Madala bested Jennings at No. 5 (6-0, 6-4), Sahana Sanjeev downed Murrell at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3), and Wong notched a win at No. 6 (7-6 [4], 6-3) over Iijima.

Junior Grace Lorenz got the Generals on the board with a three-set win at No. 3, in which she battled back against Melvin, who won the first set, for 7-5 and 6-4 wins in the second and third sets, respectively. Donnelly also forced a third set after dropping her first at No. 4 against Li, but Li outlasted Donnelly in the 10-point tiebreak for the win (6-1, 6-7 [2], 1-0 [9]).

In the final match to finish, Long faced off against Sydney Langer and moved ahead by a set, 6-2, to open the match. Langer responded with a 6-2 win in the second, before the two headed to a decisive tiebreak in the third all knotted at six games apiece. Long then kept her personal singles winning streak alive (7) with a 7-4 victory in the break.
