Baseball Secures 4-3 win over Mary Baldwin

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team completed the series sweep of Mary Baldwin University, downing the Fighting Squirrels 4-3 on Wednesday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (13–15) edged Mary Baldwin in a back-and-forth contest, securing a 4–3 victory on Tuesday evening.
  • W&L opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Jonathan French drew a walk and advanced to third on a Nick Lagges double to left-center. French came around to score on a Frankie Maloof ground out, giving the Generals a 1–0 lead.
  • Mary Baldwin tied it in the top of the fourth when Isaiah Brooks led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and was driven in by Michael Muller's single up the middle to make it 1–1.
  • The Generals responded in the bottom half of the inning. French again reached via walk, stole second, and scored on a Lagges RBI single, reclaiming the lead at 2–1.
  • The Fighting Squirrels tied the game once more in the fifth. Tyler Morley and Kelly Hackley Jr. recorded back-to-back singles, aided by a Generals' error that moved runners into scoring position. Morley scored on a ground out to even the score at 2–2.
  • W&L went back on top in the bottom of the fifth. Oakley Rempel led off with a single, advanced on a wild pitch and a catcher's balk, and scored on a Campbell Charneco sacrifice fly to give the Generals a 3–2 lead.
  • In the seventh, John Turner singled to left and later scored on a throwing error by the MBU third baseman, extending the lead to 4–2.
  • Mary Baldwin mounted a threat in the eighth. Brooks led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. With two in scoring position, Jacob Barber singled through the right side, scoring Brooks to cut the lead to 4–3. Andrew Flood entered in relief of Jimmy Horvath and got a fly out to escape the jam.
  • In the ninth, Evan Blair took the mound and worked out of a tight spot. After allowing a single and a double, he struck out Grayson Moore and Will Earnesty to shut the door and seal the Generals' victory.
