FERRUM, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team wrapped up their 2025 campaign on Saturday as they dropped a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) games at Ferrum.
GAME ONE | FC 12, W&L 11
- The Panthers (20-20, 9-13 ODAC) got on the board early in the game as Kyle Markowitz singled to left before the bases were loaded following an error and a walk. Two runners came around to score two at-bats later when Gregory Melo roped a single into left field, putting Ferrum up 2-0. Melo later came around to score on a balk to extend the lead to three.
- Washington and Lee (13-17, 6-16 ODAC) took the lead in the top of the second as singles from Jack Belbot, Paul Ramseur, and Nick Lagges loaded the bases. After a fielder's choice, Ramseur scored on a passed ball before Preston Larmore cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to tie the game at three. Larmore scored two batters later as Nathan DeWitte laid down a sacrifice bunt, giving the Generals a 4-3 lead.
- In the top of the fifth, Campbell Charneco hit a one-out triple to left field before scoring on an Andrew Thornton sacrifice fly to give W&L a two-run lead.
- Ferrum knotted the game at five in the next frame as Tyler Mason singled before coming around to score on a JJ Tyree triple. Tyree scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at five.
- The Generals broke the game open in the top of the seventh as they scored six runs on five hits. Camdyn Teague and Nathan DeWitte both singled to start the inning before Charneco wore a pitch to load the bases. Thornton was hit by a pitch the next at-bat to drive in a run before Lagges drove in a pair with a double to left-center, putting the Blue and White up 8-5. John Turner found the left-center gap for a double, driving in Lagges and Thornton to extend the lead to five. Larmore drove in Turner with a single to left field to give the Generals an 11-5 lead.
- Shawn Baxter led off the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to left field before Seth Shannon scored on a ground out a few batters later to cut the W&L lead to four.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Tyree drew a walk before Markowitz blasted a two-run home run to left field to cut the deficit to two. In the next at-bat, Baxter hit a solo homer to bring the Panthers within one. After a pair of runners reached on a fielder's choice and a single, Eli Elliott walked it off for Ferrum with a bases-clearing double to secure a 12-11 win.
GAME TWO | FC 13, W&L 10
- The Panthers wasted no time in game two as they scored five runs on three hits and a pair of errors in the bottom of the first. Ferrum extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth as Kyle Markowitz singled before moving over to second on an error. He came around to score the next at-bat when Shawn Baxter singled to center field, putting Ferrum up 6-0. The Panthers took a seven-run lead after Gregory Melo doubled to right-center, driving in Baxter from first base.
- Frankie Maloof led off the top of the fifth with a double down the right-field line before Campbell Charneco walked to put two runners on. Andrew Thornton drove in the Generals' first run of the game with a double to left field, cutting the deficit to six.
- After a walk and a single, Markowitz drove in both runners in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right field, extending the Panthers' lead to eight.
- Jack Belbot led off the top of the sixth with a walk before Jonathan French beat out an infield single and moved to second on an errant throw. Belbot and French scored on an error by the Panthers' center fielder to make it 9-3 Ferrum. After another error moved Preston Larmore to third and allowed Maloof to reach base, Larmore stole home to cut the deficit to five runs.
- The Panthers got one run back in the bottom of the sixth as Melo singled to center field, driving in Carlos Castillo from second to extend the lead to six.
- W&L cut into the lead again in the top of the seventh as Belbot singled and Mike Carpenter and French drew walks to load the bases. Larmore drove in a run with a walk before Maloof hit a two-RBI single to center, cutting the lead to three.
- In the top of the eighth, the Generals' offense drove in a pair of runs on four hits to make it a one-run ball game. Three straight singles from Charneco, Thornton, and Nick Lagges loaded the bases before a fielder's choice drove in Charneco, and a Carpenter single to left drove in Lagges to make it 10-9.
- John Turner singled in the top of the ninth to get a runner on, and with two outs, Thornton roped a double down the left-field line to tie the game at ten.
- With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, Castillo blasted a three-run home run to left-center to secure back-to-back walk-off wins for the Panthers.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals wrap up their season with a 13-17 overall record and a 6-16 mark in conference play.
- Andrew Thornton paced the Generals' offense with a 6-for-9 (.667) effort at the plate, recording three doubles and three RBI. Preston Larmore drove in a team-high six RBI across both games, finishing with a .444 average at the plate.
- Brody Pasieka (1-3) was tagged with the loss in game one after allowing one earned run on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Matt Fleming (2-3) was credited with the loss in game two after allowing three earned runs on four hits over 3.2 innings.
FERRUM GAME NOTES
- The Panthers moved to 20-20 on the season with a 9-13 record in conference play.
- Shawn Baxter led the Panthers' offense in game one, going 3-for-5 with two home runs, three runs scored, and two RBI. In game two, Gregory Melo paced the offense with a 4-for-5 effort, including a double.
- Steven Ritchie (1-0) earned the win on the mound in game one after tossing 1.1 shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Matthew Sheppard (4-3) was credited with the win in game two after allowing three earned runs on six hits over two innings of work.
