Baseball Fends Off Late Rally to Down #28 Shenandoah, 5-4

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team fended off a late rally to secure a 5-4 win over No. 28 Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (11–10, 5–9 ODAC) struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Andrew Thornton drew a lead off walk, and John Turner followed by beating out an infield single to put two runners on. After both runners advanced on a ground out, Camdyn Teague delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to give W&L a 2–0 lead.
  • In the next inning, Campbell Charneco reached on a throwing error by the Hornets' third baseman. Thornton then singled, and Paul Ramseur walked to load the bases. The Generals extended their lead to 3–0 after Charneco scored on a wild pitch.
  • W&L added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Preston Larmore was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and Teague reached on an error. Landen Rucker then reached on a throwing error that allowed Larmore to score from second. Nathan DeWitte followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought in Teague, giving the Generals a 5–0 lead.
  • Both offenses stalled for a stretch, with neither team able to generate much momentum. DeWitte held the Hornets hitless through five innings, but in the sixth, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases. DeWitte escaped the jam by inducing a fly out to left field from Noah Cornwell.
  • In the top of the seventh, Brody Pickette doubled down the left field line, and Connor Houser singled to left-center to put two runners aboard. Pickette came around to score on a Generals' error, allowing Madagan to reach base. After a single and a fielder's choice moved Madagan to third, he appeared to score on a Carver sacrifice fly but was ruled out for leaving early on an appeal play.
  • The Hornets rallied again in the top of the eighth. A single and a double set the stage for Brody Pickette, who launched a three-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 5–4. Brody Pasieka entered in relief and ended the threat after the Hornets were caught stealing.
  • In the ninth, Pasieka allowed a lead off single but retired the next two batters on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out. With two outs and a runner on second, Jamie Padilla stepped to the plate. Andrew Thornton sealed the win with a defensive gem, making a diving stop down the third-base line and throwing out Padilla at first to secure W&L's fourth straight victory.
