LEXINGTON, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team picked up an 11-8 victory over Randolph-Macon in ODAC play on Wednesday night at Watt Field.
The Generals (8-4, 6-0 ODAC) never trailed but had to fight off multiple comeback attempts from the Yellow Jackets (7-3, 2-1 ODAC), who cut the deficit to one goal on three separate occasions. W&L used a decisive 4-2 fourth-quarter push to secure the win, led by
Hannah Van Son's four-goal performance.
Game Summary
Washington and Lee opened the scoring early, with
Sophie Edwards (12:34) and
Claire Horner (10:41) netting back-to-back goals for a quick 2-0 lead. However, Randolph-Macon responded with two goals in the final seven minutes of the first quarter, tying the game at 2-2 after one and held the Generals' offense scoreless until the next stanza.
The teams traded goals in the second quarter, with Horner (12:17) and
Katie Reed (2:37) finding the back of the net for W&L, while the Yellow Jackets' Evie McNeally (4:04) kept R-MC within one at halftime, 4-3.
The Generals pulled ahead in the third quarter behind two straight goals from Van Son (7:05, 3:58), but Randolph-Macon refused to go away. Anna Snoddy's free-position goal (2:35, third quarter) brought the visitors back within one at 6-5 before
Emma Marsh (1:15) gave W&L a two-goal cushion entering the fourth.
Randolph-Macon once again pulled within a tally (7-6, 12:52, fourth quarter), but W&L responded with a 3-0 run over the next four minutes, featuring Marsh (11:12, 8:05) and Van Son (10:18) to stretch the lead to 10-6. Despite another push from R-MC, Van Son's final goal at 1:49 sealed the 11-8 victory.
