Baseball Drops Conference Game against EMU, 7-6

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game on Tuesday evening, falling to Eastern Mennonite University 7-6 at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Andrew Thornton roped a double down the left field line before coming around to score on a Paul Ramseur single up the middle, putting W&L (7-10, 2-9 ODAC) up 1-0.
  • The Blue and White struck again in the second inning as Camdyn Teague drew a walk before Larmore beat out an infield single to put a pair of runners on. Back-to-back walks from Nathan DeWitte and Nick Lagges drove in Teague from third, giving the Generals a two-run lead.
  • The Royals (7-11, 2-6 ODAC) got on the board in the top of the fourth as a walk and hit-by-pitch put a pair of runners on before Dylan Hall loaded the bases with a bunt single. Jett Cabanban came around to score following a Nick Arnold ground out, cutting the Generals' lead to one.
  • After a scoreless fifth inning, EMU took their first lead of the night after plating a pair of runs on two hits. Noah Sanderson was hit by a pitch before Hall beat out another infield single, putting two runners on. Sanderson and Hall stole second and third before Arnold drew a walk to load the bases. Sanderson came around to score in the next at-bat as Chris Polymeropoulos grounded into a fielder's choice, before Daniel McGinnis singled up the middle to give the Royals a 3-2 lead.
  • With a pair of runners on in the same inning, Evan Blair relieved DeWitte on the mound. Blair threw one pitch before picking off Polymeropoulos at second to shut down the scoring threat.
  • John Turner kicked off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left field line. Campbell Charneco moved him over 90 feet on a single to left field before coming around to score on an error by the Royals' left fielder.
  • DeWitte led off the seventh inning with a stand-up triple to center field before scoring on a Lagges sacrifice fly, putting W&L up 4-3.
  • However, the lead wouldn't last long as the Royals drove in four runs on four hits and a Generals error to take a three-run lead in the next frame. A walk and single put two runners on before Polymeropoulos cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to right-center field. He was waved around third on an Erik Wilkinson single to right and scored on a Generals' error, putting the Royals up by two. In the next at-bat, Wilkinson scored on a Dalton Rocke single through the left side of the infield to give EMU a 7-4 lead.
  • Turner drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the eighth before Charneco singled to left. After a Teague fly out moved Turner over to third, Charneco baited an errant throw as he took a big lead off first, allowing Turner to score. Jack Belbot came in to pinch hit and, after ripping a single down the right field line, Charneco scored on the Royals' second error of the inning to cut the deficit to one.
  • Brody Pasieka came on in the top of the ninth and sat the Royals down in order with a pair of strikeouts, giving the Generals an opportunity to walk it off.
  • However, Colby Edison slammed the door in the bottom half of the frame, striking out back-to-back batters before forcing a pop-up to secure a 7-6 win.
