Offense Comes Alive in Sweep over Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team scored 24 runs on 33 hits en route to a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader sweep at Guilford College on Saturday.

GAME ONE | W&L 10, GC 5
  • Nathan DeWitte got the offense rolling early for the Generals (9–10, 4–9 ODAC), leading off the game with a double to left field. Nick Lagges followed with a single through the left side, and a fielding error by the left fielder allowed DeWitte to score and moved Lagges to third. Two batters later, Campbell Charneco grounded out to bring Lagges home and give W&L a quick 2–0 lead.
  • Guilford (14–8, 3–7 ODAC) answered in the bottom half of the inning, as Christian Chinen reached on an infield single and later scored on an Aaron Williams double to cut the lead to 2–1.
  • The Generals added two more in the second. John Turner singled, and Preston Larmore was hit by a pitch. Both advanced on an errant pickoff attempt before Camdyn Teague singled to right to drive in Turner. Larmore scored on a DeWitte groundout to stretch the lead to 4–1.
  • The Quakers responded with a pair of runs in the third. Skyler Dark tripled to start the inning, scoring on a single from Rylan Smith. Smith came around on a Ryne Rodrigues RBI double, trimming the Generals' lead to 4–3.
  • In the fifth, W&L added another run as Lagges drew a walk and scored on a Paul Ramseur single to center. But once again, Guilford struck back in the bottom half, with Dark doubling and later scoring on a Williams sac fly to make it 5–4.
  • The Generals padded their lead in the sixth after Jack Belbot and DeWitte singled, and Lagges followed with an RBI knock to center to push the lead to 6–4. However, Guilford answered quickly, with Tanner Royals launching a solo home run to left to keep it close at 6–5.
  • W&L sealed the win with a big seventh inning. Charneco led off with a walk before Turner singled put a pair of runners on. After a Larmore base hit loaded the bags, Teague was hit by a pitch to force in a run. DeWitte then delivered the big blow — a bases-clearing triple to center — to give the Generals a 10–5 lead that held through the final outs.
GAME TWO | W&L 14, GC 7
  • The Generals exploded out of the gate in game two, plating 10 runs on nine hits in the opening frame to break the game wide open. Nathan DeWitte singled and Nick Lagges drew a walk before Andrew Thornton roped a double down the third base line to drive in both runners. Campbell Charneco followed with a double to center, and Paul Ramseur added an RBI single to make it 3-0.
  • W&L continued to pour it on with three straight singles from John Turner, Jack Belbot, and Preston Larmore, adding two more runs. Turner came around to score on a fielder's choice before DeWitte drew a walk in his second plate appearance of the inning. Thornton then delivered his second double of the frame, clearing the bases to extend the lead to 9-0. Charneco capped the outburst with an RBI single to drive in Thornton and give the Generals a commanding 10-0 advantage.
  • Guilford got on the board in the bottom of the first after a leadoff triple and an RBI double made it 10-1. Thornton continued his dominance in the third with his third double of the game, driving in Lagges to push the lead to 11-1. The Quakers responded with a walk and RBI triple in the bottom half to cut it to 11-2.
  • Turner led off the fourth with a double and came around to score after a Guilford fielding error, making it 12-2. The Quakers chipped away in the fourth and fifth, scoring once in each frame to cut the lead to 12-4, but the Generals quickly answered with two more runs in the fifth. Charneco scored on an error before Ramseur crossed the plate on a Turner single to extend the lead to 14-4.
  • Guilford added three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings, including a solo home run and a two-RBI single, to bring the score to 14-7. However, Evan Blair shut the door for W&L, striking out three batters across the final two innings to seal the sweep.
