JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 2-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team made a significant move on Saturday at the Jekyll Island Collegiate, climbing six spots on the leaderboard after posting a one-under-par (286) second round at Pine Lakes Course (Par 72, 6,700 yards). The Generals now sit tied for sixth place at 7-over-par (296-286—583) with Illinois Wesleyan and Lynchburg, heading into Sunday's final round.
Sewanee and Emory are now tied atop the leaderboard at 2-under-par, while Illinois Wesleyan, the first-round leader, dropped back into the tie for sixth. The course played slightly easier in round two, with the field average improving from 75.39 strokes to 75.22 strokes.
Team Performance Highlights:
- Total Birdies: 36 (Second most among all teams)
- Total Pars: 94 (Fewest among all teams)
- Par 5 Scoring: 4.7 avg. (-12) (6th overall)
- Round 2 Score: 286 (-1) (One of the best rounds of the day)
Individual Highlights:
- Sophomore Jonathan McEwen remains in third place overall at -6 (69-69—138), sitting just three strokes behind leader Jonas De Leon (Redlands). He recorded five birdies on Saturday and finished the front nine with four birdies and only one over-par hole.
- First-year Timothy Kaufman made a massive 23-position leap to T-11th after a 2-under-par (70) second round, bringing his two-day total to 1-under (73-70—143). He tallied five birdies in the second round.
- First-year Charlie Krasnewich surged 31 spots up the leaderboard, now tied for 52nd at +5 (76-73—149). His round was highlighted by going two strokes under par on the final four holes.
- Senior Will Braxton is tied for 99th place at +9 (78-75—153) after posting two birdies in his second round and improving by three strokes from Day 1.
- Senior Elias Malakoff also made strides, improving his personal score by three strokes over two rounds. He is tied for 131st at +13 (80-77—157), recording three birdies in the second round.
