W&L Men’s Golf Opens Jekyll Island Collegiate in 12th Place

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The No. 2-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team completed the first round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate on Friday, finishing tied for 12th place with a team score of 296 (+8) at Pine Lakes Course (Par 72, 6,700 yards). The Generals sit eight strokes behind tournament leader No. 3 Illinois Wesleyan (-4, 284) heading into Saturday's second round.

The Generals recorded 19 birdies, the most of any team in the field, but struggled with consistency, recording the fewest total pars (39) among all teams. W&L also capitalized on par 5 opportunities, ranking third overall in par 5 scoring with a 4.55 stroke average (-9 total).

  • Par 5 Scoring: 4.55 avg. (-9) (3rd overall)

Individual Highlights:

  • Sophomore Jonathan McEwen is tied for 2nd place (-3, 69) after an outstanding round. He carded eight birdies, including a five-birdie front nine, finishing 4-under on the front side.
  • First-year Timothy Kaufman is tied for 34th place (+1, 73), posting four birdies and finishing 1-under on the front nine.
  • First-year Charlie Krasnewich sits tied for 83rd at +4 (76),
  • Senior Will Braxton is tied for 113th at +6 (78).
  • Senior Elias Malakoff is tied for 130th at +8 (80) but provided a highlight moment with an eagle on the 18th hole, a 485-yard par 5.

Up Next:
The Generals will begin second-round play on Saturday, March 22, at 12:46 p.m., teeing off on Hole 1. W&L looks to climb the leaderboard heading into the weekend.
