BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team dropped their sixth straight game on Wednesday, falling to Bridgewater College 13-7 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) road game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (5-8, 1-7 ODAC) struck first in the opening frame as Nathan DeWitte and Nick Lagges recorded back-to-back doubles to lead off the game. DeWitte came around to score on an Andrew Thornton sacrifice fly, putting the Blue and White up 1-0.
- In the top of the second, Camdyn Teague was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before stealing second to put himself in scoring position. With two outs, Teague took off for third and successfully swiped the bag, but an errant throw by the Eagles' (10-7-1, 2-2-1 ODAC) catcher allowed him to score, giving W&L a two-run lead.
- Bridgewater's offense got going in the bottom of the second, scoring four runs on three hits to take its first lead of the game after a trio of singles and walks.
- Washington and Lee cut the deficit to one as DeWitte blasted a solo shot—the first home run of his career—bringing the score to 4-3 in favor of the Eagles.
- Frankie Maloof singled before Mike Carpenter doubled to right field, putting a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth. DeWitte drew a walk to load the bases before Maloof scored on a Lagges walk to tie the game at four. Thornton drove in Carpenter with a single to left field before a Campbell Charneco single plated a pair of runs, putting W&L up 7-4.
- Bridgewater tied the game at seven in the bottom of the sixth after Bransen Hensley led off the inning with a single. Chandler Valbak roped a double into right-center field to plate a run before coming around to score on an Ashton Smith triple. Smith then scored in the next at-bat as Trent Holland singled up the middle, tying the game at seven.
- The Eagles plated four more runs in the bottom of the seventh on four hits. After back-to-back singles from Hensley and Stavros and a walk from Suters, Stavros cleared the bases with a double to left field. He then came around to score in the next at-bat as Holland doubled to left field, giving Bridgewater an 11-7 lead.
- Bridgewater added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth as Stavros plated two runs with a single up the middle, putting the Eagles up 13-7.
- Tyler Jones finished off the game on the mound for BC, tossing clean sheet to secure the Eagles' third straight win.
