Offensive Outburst Propels Baseball to 15-6 Rout of Mary Baldwin

LEXINGTON, Va. - Behind season-highs in hits and runs scored, the Washington and Lee University baseball team got back into the win column with a 15-6 rout of Mary Baldwin University on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Generals (6-8) struck first in the bottom of the first as John Turner and Nick Lagges reached base on a hit-by-pitch and a single to center field, respectively. An Andrew Thornton walk loaded the bases before a fielding error by the Squirrels (1-16) allowed Turner to score, giving W&L a 1-0 lead.
  • Mary Baldwin took a 2-1 lead in the next frame as back-to-back singles from Tyler Smith and Logan Roop put a pair of runners on. Following an error by the Generals' defense, Camden Bauswell roped a single down the right-field line to drive in two runs.
  • Nathan DeWitte tied the game at two in the bottom of the third with a solo shot to center field, his second home run in as many games.
  • W&L regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Campbell Charneco led off the inning with a walk before Camdyn Teague doubled to left field, putting two runners in scoring position. Charneco came around to score on a William Melton ground out, putting the Generals ahead by one. Ryan McGovern then drove in Teague from second with a double to right-center, marking his first collegiate hit and extending W&L's lead to 4-2.
  • The Squirrels leveled the score in the next frame as Smith roped a two-RBI double to left-center field. In the top of the sixth, Mary Baldwin retook the lead following a fielding error by the Blue and White.
  • However, the Generals broke the game open in the next frame, plating four runs on five hits. DeWitte reached first on an error before stealing second and coming around to score on a Lagges single to left field. Thornton drove in Lagges in the next at-bat with a double to left-center before scoring on a Paul Ramseur single down the right-field line. Charneco picked up his second hit of the day with a single through the left side before Teague plated a pair of runs with a single, putting W&L up 8-5.
  • The Washington and Lee offense kept producing in the seventh as a John Turner double drove in DeWitte before Ramseur ripped a two-RBI double down the left-field line, extending the Generals' lead to 11-5.
  • A walk and a hit-by-pitch put a pair of runners on for the Squirrels in the eighth before Bauswell doubled down the right-field line, cutting the W&L lead to five.
  • The Blue and White finished out the game with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Melton doubled to left field, driving in Teague to extend the lead to six. Preston Larmore drove in Melton in the next at-bat with a single to center field before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly. Thornton plated the final run of the game, driving in DeWitte from second base with a double to center field.
  • Henry Steene closed out the final 1.2 innings in relief, forcing a pair of fly outs and a ground out to seal W&L's 15-6 win.
