FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team returned to action after just under three weeks off with a 6-1 win over No. 30 Mary Washington on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Generals (5-1) went into singles play with the one-point lead after picking up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Junior
Annie Jennings and sophomore
Haley Stoltz were 6-3 victors at No. 2, with junior
Isabella Custard and first-year
Sarah Donnelly posting a 6-0 score at No. 3.
W&L went on to win 5-of-6 singles matches to claim the convincing win. Donnelly (2), Jennings (4) and junior
Riho Iijima (5) all won in straight sets to highlights singles play, while Stoltz won in three sets over Linda Dimitroff (6-3, 0-6, 6-4). Jennings had the largest win in the singles, winning both of her sets, 6-2. Donnelly and Iijima had near identical scores of 7-6, 6-4, with the only difference being a 7-0 tiebreak win for Donnelly to a 9-7 score for Iijima.
First-year
Jackie Daynovsky rallied at No. 6 after dropping her first set, 6-4, for 6-3 wins in both the second and third sets. The Eagles got their lone point of the match from the top singles spot, as Addison Felts downed
Allie Murrell, 6-3, 6-0.
