FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The No. 7 Washington and Lee women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 defeat against 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Tartans (13-0) took two of the three doubles matches to claim the early 1-0 lead, with each match being decided by two games or less. W&L (5-2) won at No. 2 behind a 6-4
Annie Jennings and
Haley Stoltz victory, but CMU's Zoe Angell and Anna Chow won 7-6 (1) at No. 1, and Anika Joshi and Shelly Zinchenko won 7-5 at No. 3.
With the team's playing to decision, the Tartans next three points came from singles matches 1, 3 and 6. Zinchenko downed first-year
Allie Murrell, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1, Ancele Dolensek topped Stoltz, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, and Manuela Van Cotthem got past first-year
Jackie Daynovsky, 7-5, 6-2.
CMU's Sarah Yang was one game away from winning at No. 2 when match point was clinched, with Jennings and junior
Riho Iijima battling at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Jennings dropped the first set against Divya Venkatarama, but the two were in a second-set tiebreak when the match ended, while Iijima and Victoria Gazda were tied, 1-1, in the third set.

The Generals will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Newport News, Va., for a Saturday match against No. 5 Wesleyan and a Sunday contest against No. 17 Christopher Newport.
