LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team secured their first nine inning shutout since 2020 on Thursday afternoon, blanking Mary Baldwin University 7-0 at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (3-1) found some momentum in the bottom of the third after William Melton drew a walk before Camdyn Teague registered his first collegiate hit with a double down the left-field line. Two batters later, Nick Lagges roped a triple down the right-field line, bringing home Melton and Teague. W&L had runners on the corners after Andrew Thornton was hit by a pitch. John Turner drove in Lagges with an infield single, putting the Blue and White up 3-0.
- After Nathan DeWitte shut down the Mary Baldwin (0-4) offense for the next two innings, Oakley Rempel secured his first collegiate hit with a double to right field to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning.
- Lagges singled through the right side of the infield before advancing to second on a wild pitch, putting two runners in scoring position. Thornton reached on a single and advanced to second following a throwing error by the MBU third baseman. The error allowed Rempel and Lagges to score, extending the Generals' lead to six.
- Mary Baldwin was hitless until the top of the sixth when Wesley Strychowski beat out an infield single with two outs to break up the no-hitter. Will Hanna got out of the inning after forcing Noah Kessler to fly out to right field.
- Lagges led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single before John Turner was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. After both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, Landen Rucker drove in Lagges with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring the Generals' final run of the game.
- Henry Steene came in to close out the game in the ninth. After allowing a single, Steene forced two pop-outs and a ground out to secure the Blue and White's third win of the season.
