ASHLAND, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team kicked off Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play with a doubleheader split at No. 13 Randolph-Macon College on Saturday.
GAME ONE | #13 RMC 13, W&L 6
- The Generals (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) struck first in the top of the second as Andrew Thornton doubled to right-center to kick off the inning. John Turner reached first following an error before Paul Ramseur roped a double to right-center to plate the game's first run.
- W&L took a 3-0 lead after Preston Larmore drove in Turner on a sacrifice fly and Mike Carpenter singled to bring Ramseur around to score.
- The Yellow Jackets (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) wasted no time in the bottom half of the second, knotting the game at three on two hits and an error. Jack Bowles blasted a two-run home run in the second at-bat of the inning before Jon Quici drove in CJ Chatterton with a single to right-center.
- Campbell Charneco helped the Blue and White retake the lead in the top of the third with a solo shot to right field, giving W&L a 4-3 advantage.
- Both offenses cooled down until the bottom of the fifth inning, when RMC exploded for seven runs on four hits to take a 10-4 lead. The Generals cut the Yellow Jackets' lead to five after Nick Lagges singled up the middle, then advanced to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Landen Rucker had a productive at-bat as a pinch hitter, bringing Lagges home on a sacrifice fly to right field.
- Randolph-Macon plated three more runs in the next two innings, scoring on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and two singles, extending their lead to 13-5. The Blue and White plated the final run of the game in the eighth, as Charneco and Lagges drew back-to-back walks before Thornton drove in Charneco with a single to left field.
GAME TWO | W&L 14, #13 RMC 12 (8 inn. due to darkness)
- The Yellow Jackets wasted no time in game two, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Zach Wernoski drove in Quici with a double down the left-field line before Aaron Lautenschlager blasted a two-run home run.
- W&L responded in the next half-inning as Thornton got the offense going with a double to right-center field before Turner singled to put runners on the corners. Nathan DeWitte drove in Thornton two at-bats later with a double down the right-field line before Mike Carpenter roped a two-RBI double to left field to knot the game at three.
- The Generals took a one-run lead in the third inning as Lagges reached base on an error before another Thornton double put two runners in scoring position. Lagges came around to score following a Turner ground out, giving the Blue and White a 4-3 lead.
- RMC reclaimed the lead an inning later, plating three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. W&L cut the deficit to one in the top half of the fifth as Turner was hit by a pitch and Ramseur singled to right field. DeWitte tallied his second RBI of the game with a single through the left side, bringing home Turner.
- The Yellow Jackets had another productive half-inning, scoring three more runs on four hits to extend their lead to 9-5. However, the Blue and White were unfazed as they responded with six runs on six hits to take an 11-9 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Camdyn Teague singled up the middle before Charneco was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Lagges drove in Teague from second with a double down the left-field line to cut the deficit to three. A Thornton sacrifice fly drove in another run before Turner brought in the third run of the inning with a single to center field.
- Turner swiped second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Ramseur drove him in with a double to right field. Following a DeWitte walk to put runners on first and second, Preston Larmore and Carpenter each singled to drive in a pair of runs, giving W&L an 11-9 lead.
- A solo home run in the bottom of the sixth cut the Generals' lead to one before Randolph-Macon regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Following a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Carter Schmitt doubled to right-center to bring home a run before Lautenschlager singled to give RMC a 12-11 lead.
- DeWitte kicked off the top of the eighth with a single before Larmore moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Teague joined DeWitte on the base path after being hit by a pitch before Charneco tied the game with a single to center field. Thornton put the Blue and White up 14-12 with a single to right field, driving in Charneco and Teague.
- Evan Blair shut the door in the eighth inning, forcing two pop-ups and striking out Quici to earn the win on the mound after the game was called due to darkness.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals moved to 4-2 on the season while posting a 1-1 record in conference play. This marked the fourth straight regular-season split between the two teams, dating back to the 2022 season.
- W&L also posted a season-best 14 runs in game two, scoring double-digit runs for the second time this season and the most against the Yellow Jackets since 2017, when they scored 11. The Blue and White's 19 hits in game two is the most since they recorded 27 hits in a 21-6 win at Hampden-Sydney in 2022.
- Evan Blair (1-1) was credited with the win in game two after allowing no runs on one hit with a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work. Cooper Charneco (0-1) took the loss in game one after allowing four runs (four earned) on two hits in 1.1 innings.
- Nathan DeWitte paced the Blue and White's offense with a 3-for-4 (.750) performance at the plate, recording a double and two RBI. Paul Ramseur and Andrew Thornton each went 5-for-9 (.556) across the two games, combining for five doubles and six RBI.
RANDOLPH-MACON GAME NOTES
- The Yellow Jackets moved to 4-2 on the season with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
- Aaron Lautenschlager paced the RMC offense with a 7-for-8 effort at the plate, recording a double, two home runs, two walks, and six RBI.
- Bere Bauers (1-1) earned the win in game one after allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Sam Slevin (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (three earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings of action.
