Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

No. 10 Women's Tennis falls against No. 5 Emory

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team kept it close with two singles matches remaining, but No. 5 Emory pulled out wins in those matches to secure a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Emory (2-0) gained the upper hand in doubles play as Izabele Antanavicius and Iris Berman picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2. Juniors Lauren Long and Grace Lorenz had a response for the Generals (3-1) at No. 1 with a 6-3 win to leave the doubles point in the hands of the No. 3 match. That battle ended in favor of the Eagles, 6-3, as Eliza McPherron and Yanire Marte were the victors over Isabella Custard and Sarah Donnelly.

Antanavicius got the Eagles their second point at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over W&L's Allie Murrell, before Long got the Generals on the board with a straight-set win (6-4, 6-3) over Emily Kantrovitz at No. 1. Berman and Lorenz faced off at No. 3 singles, with Berman putting Emory just one point away from the team win with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory.

Sophomore Haley Stoltz kept the Generals alive with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 over McPherron, but Marte then clinched the match for the Eagles with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4.

W&L's Annie Jennings and Emory's Rachel Hernandez were in the final match of the day at No. 6, but Hernandez came away with the 6-1, 7-5 win.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Long picked up another impressive singles win to start her junior season. After defeating the 13th-ranked singles player on Friday in Trinity's Ruth Hill, Long defeated Kantrovitz on Saturday, the third-ranked player in Division III and top-rated player in the Atlantic South Region. Long has won all four sets played so far this spring, winning 24 games and dropping just 10.

Long and Lorenz are also off to a strong start in doubles play, as their win at No. 1 on Saturday came over the third-ranked tandem in Division III in Kantrovitz and Dakota Fordham. In their first two matches this spring, Long and Lorenz have won 12 games and dropped only four.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will be off from match play for eight days before returning to action on Monday, February 24, at home against Pfeiffer at 1:00 p.m.
