Generals edge Kenyon in Holiday Tournament championship game

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore Connor Amorosi picked up W&L Holiday Tournament MVP honors with a season-high 27 points in a 66-62 win over Kenyon on Tuesday in the tournament championship game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With the game seemingly in hand for the Generals (9-1), the Owls (7-4) fought until the very end, as they used a 16-5 run from 4:48 to 0:43 to cut a 13-point deficit all the way down to two points. That also included a 10-point deficit with just two and a half minutes to play.
  • After a Langston Foster layup made it 64-62, the Owls forced a shot clock violation for a chance to tie or win the game. The W&L defense, however, forced a Foster miss, with first-year Addison Newkirk securing the rebound plus two free throws on the other end with 0.9 seconds left, sealing the win.
  • Both teams were evenly matched through nearly 10 minutes of play at 12-12, with Amorosi tallying all 12 points for the Generals. W&L held a 29-26 lead at the break in a half that saw 14 lead changes.
  • Through the first eight minutes of the second half, W&L sought to distance themselves from the Owls, sinking 7-of-11 shots to gradually build a nine-point lead with 12:41 left.
  • Four straight points from Kenyon were then followed by a 13-5 W&L run where the Generals made another 5-of-8 shots to take their 13-point lead heading into the final five minutes.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Amorosi's 27 points were scored on 10-of-18 from the floor and 4-of-6 from long range. He also pulled down four rebounds and had a block and an assist. Senior Colin Ryan approached triple-double territory, as he finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
  • Senior John Loughlin, sophomore Jackson Ransom and Newkirk all scored six points and had at least five rebounds. Loughlin led that trio with seven boards, trailing only Ryan for the team lead.
  • Marius Mazeika led the Owls with 16 points, followed by 13 from Foster. Jackson Burke had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Nick Nelson contributed 10 points. Both Burke and Nelson made 4-of-7 field goal attempts.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Amorosi and Ryan were both named to the All-Tournament Team from the Generals, with Amorosi picking up MVP honors. Burke joined on the All-Tournament team behind a pair of double-doubles at the Holiday Tournament.
  • Ryan has excelled in the W&L Holiday Tournament in his career, particularly the last two seasons. He tallied a 13-point, 12-rebound, 12-assist triple-double in last year's championship game before being just two boards and three dimes short in the 2025 edition.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals shot 46.0 percent (23-50) from the floor in the game, but had much greater success in the second half going 14-of-26 (.539) from the floor and 5-for-8 (.625) from beyond the arc.
  • The Owls made 40.4 percent (23-57) of their shots in the game, but struggled throughout the game from outside. They made just 2-of-20 three-point shots, including 0-of-8 in the first half.
  • W&L outrebounded Kenyon 37-31, but the Owls forced six more turnovers than they committed (15-9).
  • The Generals held the edge in the game in second-chance points (9-6) and bench points (8-4), while Kenyon was superior in points off turnovers (13-9), points in the paint (42-20) and fastbreak points (9-5).
UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to action after the calendar flips to 2026, as they travel to Guilford on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. All 15 of W&L's remaining games in the regular season will be in-conference contests.
