Balanced performance gets Generals ODAC-opening win over Averett

LEXINGTON, Va. – A massive first-half run, coupled with balanced scoring early, propelled the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 75-55 win over Averett on Wednesday night in the team's ODAC opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams struggled out of the gates, as it took nearly three minutes before either scored. After a Tyler Stephens dunk opened the scoring for the Cougars (4-2), the Generals (6-0) proceeded to go on a 32-5 run over the next 11 minutes and claim a 25-point lead.
  • W&L got a high of nine points from senior John Loughlin, with eight total players logging points. That run helped the Generals mount a 41-17 halftime lead, which saw 10 different W&L players score.
  • The Generals kept their distance from the Cougars through 10 minutes of the second half, still commanding a 26-point lead. Averett then showed its best fight of the game with a 19-8 run across the next seven minutes of game time to make it a 70-55 W&L lead with 1:46 remaining.
  • A free throw from Stephens with 1:46 left was the final mark on the scoreboard, however, for the visitors. Junior Ishaan Bhadouria, sophomore Coen Locklear and junior Dakota Gordon rounded out the scoring after that.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Senior A.J. Thomas led the Blue and White with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting overall, including 3-of-6 from long range. Loughlin followed with nine points, which came on 3-of-7 shooting from long range. Loughlin also had two steals.
  • Senior Colin Ryan and sophomores Connor Amorosi and Ari Hobson all scored eight points, with Hobson making all four of his shot attempts. Ryan had three rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Amorosi tied first-year Addison Newkirk for the game high with five rebounds.
  • First-year Kevin Die' provided 19 strong minutes off the bench, dishing out a team-best five assists and leading the Generals' defense with three steals.
  • Stephens paced the Cougars with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double, to go along with two blocks and three steals. Mason Mitchell scored 10 points and grabbed five boards. Blair Crumbie added nine points and four rebounds.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • With Wednesday's win, the Generals are off to the program's first 6-0 start to a season since the 1987-88 campaign.
  • Wednesday marked the first conference game of the season for all ODAC men's basketball teams. Among the six winning teams on the night, the Generals posted the third-largest margin of victory.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Generals shot 47.4 percent (27-57) from the floor in the game, including 53.6 percent (15-28) in the first half. They also made 32 percent (8-25) of their threes and 92.9 percent (13-14) at the free throw line.
  • Averett was held to 35 percent (21-60) shooting for the night, including 24.1 percent (7-29) in the first half. They also only made 5-of-23 triples and 8-of-14 foul shots.
  • Both teams secured 36 rebounds, but the Cougars held a 16-10 advantage on the offensive glass. That led to a 10-6 scoring edge in second-chance points.
