Schleusner Surpasses 2,000 Career Points in Daytona Beach Shootout Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 8/7 Washington and Lee University women's basketball team defeated No. 14/21 Carroll University (Wis.) 76-66 to conclude the Daytona Beach Shootout while senior Mary Schleusner became the first player in program history to surpass 2,000 career points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Zou Raine provided the games first point with a layup before knocking down a foul shot to put the Generals (10-0) up 3-0. Both teams traded buckets throughout the quarter with Carroll (8-3) taking a four point lead with three minutes to go. Sarah Zimmerman gave the Generals a 16-15 lead after finishing off a three-point play before Natalie Gricius knocked down a three to give the Pioneers a 18-16 lead. Just like the first quarter, both teams couldn't gain much of a lead until a Sam Collins three-pointer put the Generals up 29-24 with two minutes to play in the half. Mary Schleusner knocked down a jumper to extend the Blue and White's lead to six before back-to-back three-pointers from the Pioneers sent the game to halftime tied at 33.
  • Both teams were neck and neck to start the third quarter with both teams unable to manage more than a three-point lead. However, a layup from Schlesuner and a pair of free throws from S. Zimmerman put the Generals in front by four. Collins sent the Blue and White into the final quarter of play with a 53-48  lead after knocking down another three-pointer. Quinn McGuinness kicked off a 7-2 run for the Blue and White with a layup which also featured a three-pointer and two free throws from Zou Raine to put the Generals up by nine. Collins and Megan Zimmerman both knocked down shots from beyond the arc while Schleusner added a pair of layups to give the Blue and White a 17-point lead, their largest lead of the game, before coasting to a 76-66 win over the Pioneers.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Schleusner led all scorers with 26 points on 12-of-26 (46%) shooting from the field while grabbing a game-high 19 rebounds. She added a game-high four steals, two blocks and two assists. Sarah Zimmerman shot 7-of-12 from the field for a season-high 19 points while adding nine rebounds and a team-high five assists. 
  • Julia Lokker led the Pioneers with 23 points on a 9-of-13 performance from the field while knocking down four of her six three-point attempts. Emilie Wizner (16) and Natalie Gricius (15) each added double-digit points in the loss with Gricius grabbing a team-high eight boards.
TEAM STATS
  • The win extended the Generals winning streak to ten, the third-longest winning streak in program history. It also marked their first win over Carroll University.
  • The Generals shot 40.3 percent (24-of-72) from the field, while shooting 50% in the second (8-of-16) and fourth quarter (8-of-16). They also connected on 27.3 percent (6-of-22) of their attempts from beyond the arc while knocking down 12 of their 13 free throws (92.3%).
NOTEWORTHY POINTS
  • Senior Mary Schleusner became the first player in program history and the fifth player in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) history to surpass 2,000 career points during a career. Schleusner scored 26 points this afternoon to sit at 2,003 career points.
