DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 8/7 Washington and Lee University women's basketball team kicked off the Daytona Beach Shootout with a 68-33 win over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinn McGuinness kicked off the game with a three-pointer before Mary Schleusner added three more points from the free throw line to give the Generals (9-0) a 6-2 lead. The Blue and White found themselves with a five point lead heading into the second quarter after Megan Zimmerman knocked down a shot from beyond the arc and Caroline Shimp went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. W&L's lead expanded to 13 in the second frame with eight unanswered points. Schleusner recorded a layup before Riley Bryant and Elka Prechel each made three-pointers to put the Blue and White up 22-9. Back-to-back layups from Sarah Zimmerman and Schleusner sent the Generals into halftime with a 37-18 lead.
- The Generals' took a 31-point lead following the break following a 12 point run which featured jumpers from Zou Raine, Bryant, and McGuinness. M. Zimmerman found Sam Collins for a fast break basket before Shimp knocked down both her shots at the line to give the Generals a 57-23 lead late in the third. S. Zimmerman went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to end the quarter, giving the Generals a 33-point lead heading into the final quarter of play. Prechel gave the Generals' their largest lead of the game as she recorded her third three-point to expand the lead to 36. The Blue and White closed out the game with four unanswered points to secure a 68-33 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Mary Schleusner secured her seventh double-double of the season, posting a game-high 15 points and 15 rebounds. She shot 6-of-12 from the field and knocked down three of her four free throws, while also adding four blocks, three assists, and two steals. Elka Prechel and Quinn McGuinness each added nine points in the win, with Prechel connecting on a season-high three shots from beyond the arc.
- Megan Zimmerman dished out a team-high three assists while recording a pair of steals and scoring six points. Sarah Zimmerman also grabbed eight rebounds in the victory.
- Allie Dwyer led the Nor'easters with seven points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field, including one three-pointer. Hannah Cook and Gabby Soter paced UNE on the glass with five rebounds apiece.
TEAM STATS
- The win marked the Generals' ninth straight victory of the season and also their first win over the University of New England in the programs' first-ever meeting.
- The Generals shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field, including a game-high 52.6 percent (10-of-19) in the second quarter. They also connected on 30.4 percent (7-of-23) of their attempts from beyond the arc while knocking down 13 of their 16 free throws (81.3%).
