DANVILLE, Va. - The No. 7/8 Washington and Lee University women's basketball team rallied past Averett University on Tuesday, 73-65, to secure their seventh-straight win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (7-0, 2-0 ODAC) opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Zou Raine, followed by a layup from Quinn McGuinness. Averett (1-5, 0-1 ODAC) knocked down a shot from behind the arc before the Blue and White closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run, capped by back-to-back buckets from Mary Schleusner. The Cougars opened the second frame with a 10-6 run before a McGuinness layup shut down the attack. However, Averett closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 30-29 lead heading into the break.
- Raine opened the second half with five points of her own, nailing a three followed by a pair of free throws. An ensuing 12-6 run by the Generals gave them a 10-point lead, thanks to multiple buckets from McGuinness and Schleusner. A layup from Crishya Sellers and free throws from Daishaundri Giggetts cut the Generals' lead to eight heading into the final quarter. W&L took a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter as Riley Bryant and Icy Keneah both drove the lane and scored, and Keneah knocked down one of her free throws. The Cougars rattled off nine unanswered points to cut the deficit to six, following a three and a jumper from Zariia America as well as a two-pointer from Lily Strittmatter. Sam Collins knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to give the Generals a 70-57 lead before the Cougars ended the game on an 8-3 run, as the Generals secured a 73-65 win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Schleusner secured her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting and pulling down 17 rebounds. McGuinness and Raine also reached double figures, with McGuinness adding 17 points and Raine recording a career-high 15. Riley Bryant grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the win as well.
- Daishaundria Giggetts led the Cougars with 18 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor, going 8-for-8 at the line and recording a team-high five steals. Zariia America (13) and Jy'Lyia Mizell (12) both scored in double figures, with America grabbing a team-high five rebounds.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals moved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in ODAC play with the win, marking their sixth straight victory over the Cougars. They shot 26-of-66 (39.4%) from the field and knocked down three of their 16 three-point attempts. W&L was 18-of-22 (82%) from the charity stripe and scored 44 of its 73 points in the paint.
- The Blue and White out rebounded the Cougars, 54-28, while registering seven steals, three blocks, and 17 assists. W&L committed a game-high 28 turnovers compared to the Cougars' 19.
