LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 8/7 Washington and Lee University women's basketball team defeated Stevenson University 68-45 on Saturday afternoon inside Holekamp Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded points to start the game before a pair of free throws from Quinn McGuinness sent the Generals (8-0) on a 7-2 run to take a 12-4 lead. Riley Bryant knocked down a three while Caroline Shimp added a jumper during the run as well. A McGuinness layup and one free throw from Mary Schleusner gave the Blue and White a 23-20 lead after the first quarter.
- W&L's lead expanded to ten in the second quarter after Bryant and Sam Collins knocked down back-to-back threes. Two straight baskets from Collins and Megan Zimmerman put the Generals up 41-28 before back-to-back layups from the Mustangs (3-4) cut into W&L's lead late in the quarter. Schleusner added a pair of points from the charity stripe to send W&L into the break with a 43-31 lead.
- Washington and Lee's took a 20-point lead thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Elka Prechel and back-to-back layups from Bryant and Schleusner. Prechel and Shimp added layups late in the third frame to give the Blue and White a 59-37 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
- Two straight layups from Schleusner put the Generals up by 26 to start the fourth quarter. The Mustangs cut into the deficit thanks to a three-pointer from Anaya Price and a jumper from Aliyah Jean-Jacques. Collins put the Blue and White back up by 22 following a three-point play. Kate Kennedy added the final points of the game with a layup to secure the 68-45 win over the Mustangs.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Schleusner posted her sixth double-double of the season, scoring 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting from the floor while adding 13 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Riley Bryant added 14 points on 60 percent shooting from the field with seven boards and a team-high four assists while Sam Collins added 11 points.
- Anaya Price led the Mustangs with nine points while Aliyah Jean-Jacques recorded eight on 4-of-6 shooting. Janiya Ennis led the team with five rebounds while adding four points, two assists and one block.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals moved to 8-0 on the season while notching their third straight win over the Mustangs. They improved to 7-1 in the all-time series, dating back to the first match up during the 1995–96 season.
- The Generals shot 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the field, including 53.3 percent (8-of-15) in the first quarter. They also connected on 32.0 percent (7-of-22) of their attempts from beyond the arc while knocking down 11 of their 15 free throws (73.3%).
