Women's Tennis sweeps Asbury, Virginia Wesleyan to end fall season

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's tennis team swept a pair of home dual matches on Saturday against Asbury and Virginia Wesleyan to close out the fall portion of its competition schedule.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (ASBURY – W, 7-0):
  • The Generals not only got the doubles point, but also swept the opening three matches for the 1-0 lead. Senior Isabella Custard paired with first-year Sarah Ladd at No. 2, while sophomores Jackie Daynovsky and Mary Kate Kahl teamed up at No. 3. Both teams won, 6-1.
  • Senior Grace Lorenz and sophomore Sarah Donnelly rounded out doubles play at No. 1 with a 6-4 victory over Katherine Nova and Ariadna Zegarra.
  • Ladd (3), Custard (5) and Kahl (6) highlighted singles play with 6-0, 6-0 wins over their opponents. Lorenz (2) and senior Riho Iijima (4) had matching winning scores of 6-0, 6-1.
  • Donnelly completed the 7-0 win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 against Nova.
HOW IT HAPPENED (VWU – W, 7-0):
  • The Marlins provided a tougher test against the Generals, but the Blue and White didn't falter. It was another 7-0 win for W&L including a doubles sweep.
  • Senior Annie Jennings and sophomore Greer Webb got a quick win at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, while Ladd and classmate Margarette Berdy (1), along with senior Jordan Kach and first-year Lulu Koziol (3), won by 6-3 scores.
  • Koziol had the largest margin of victory in singles, topping Jette Dammeier 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5. Kach dropped only one game in both sets in a win at No. 4, and Daynovsky won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.
  • Berdy (1), Jennings (2) and Webb (3) capped off the W&L sweep with straight-set wins each.
UP NEXT:
This concludes the fall schedule for the W&L women's tennis team this season. The Generals will pick up spring action on February 13 at 4:00 p.m. against Shenandoah.
