Series History:
This match up marks the tenth meeting in program history between the two institutions and only the fourth Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matchup. The Blue and White have won the last four meetings, shutting out the Cougars twice. The Generals and Cougars first met during the 2007 season in Salem, Virginia, where W&L walked away with a 35–21 victory.
W&L blanked the Cougars 35–0 under the lights at Wilson Field last season, holding the Averett offense to only 155 yards of total offense. The Blue and White rushed for 364 of their 410 total yards in that match up with five touchdowns, averaging 7.3 yards per rush. Anthony Crawford scored four times in the win with rushing touchdowns of 1, 2, 9, and 35 yards, while Wilson Axley added a three-yard score in the third quarter. Ty Collins completed all five of his passes for 46 yards, while Crawford rushed ten times for 92 yards in addition to his four touchdowns.
The Generals' defense forced four punts, a fumble, and a pair of turnovers on downs to secure their first shutout since 2022. Brennan Stout anchored the defense with ten total stops, including four solo tackles and one sack. Steve Tracanna caused and recovered the lone fumble of the game as well.
Scouting the Cougars:
The Cougars are heading into Week Nine with an 0–7 overall record and a 0–5 mark in ODAC play. Averett has had a rough three-game stretch, getting outscored 192–30 by Randolph-Macon, Hampden-Sydney, and Shenandoah. Last week in Winchester, the Cougars fell 48–3 to Shenandoah University. They generated 252 yards of offense, including 198 yards through the air, but committed a fumble and threw two interceptions. Quarterback Ethan Ross completed 22 of his 25 passes (88%) for 136 yards while adding 11 yards on the ground. Gaby Soto led the rushing unit with 12 carries for 22 yards, while Jamarrie Lumpkins caught a game-high four passes for 34 yards.
This season, the Cougars are averaging 14.3 points per game while compiling 295.1 yards per game. They average 244.6 passing yards per game and 50.6 rushing yards per game. Ethan Ross is 135-for-218 (62%) with eight interceptions, totaling 1,233 passing yards and nine touchdowns—an average of 205.5 yards per game. Gaby Soto leads the rushing attack with 44 carries for 88 yards, while Ross ranks second on the team with 87 yards on 39 carries and two touchdowns. Kayden Jackson has hauled in a team-high 27 catches for 286 yards and one score, averaging 40.9 yards per game, while Jamahrie Owens leads the receiving corps with four touchdowns on 21 catches for 215 yards.
Defensively, Averett is allowing 54.6 points and 464.0 yards per game through seven games this season. They are giving up 246.3 rushing yards and 217.7 passing yards per game, while conceding 29 rushing touchdowns. Bo Blankenship has registered a team-high 37 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Rocco Fazzolari leads the defense with five tackles for loss, while Ivan Williams and Nick Lincoln have each posted two sacks this season.
Scouting the Generals:
The Generals are heading into Week Nine with a 4-3 record and a 4-1 mark in conference play. Winners of their last three, the Blue and White survived a thrilling overtime game, knocking off Bridgewater College 20-17 at Wilson Field. In last week's game, Michael Schoenberg found the end zone twice to take a 14-6 lead before the Generals' defense forced a field goal on the Eagles' first possession of overtime. Ty Collins then found Fidel Small all alone in the end zone on their first play of overtime to down the Eagles for the third-straight meeting.
W&L's offense is averaging 27.1 points per game while compiling 389.0 yards per game, the second-best output in the conference. They lead the ODAC and rank fifth in Division III this season in rushing offense, averaging 273.4 yards per game while throwing for 115.6 per game. Ty Collins is 58-of-101 (57%) in the pocket this season, throwing for 805 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions. Ryan Clemens has led the rushing attack the past few weeks with 63 carries for 335 yards and one touchdown, averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Teddy Sparrow leads the receiving corps with 11 catches for 282 yards and three scores, averaging 40.3 yards per game.
The Generals' defense is allowing 21.1 points per game and 296.4 total yards of offense through eight weeks of action. They are limiting teams to 122.6 yards per game on the ground while allowing 173.8 through the air. They have forced seven turnovers this season, picking off seven passes while recovering one fumble. Brennan Stout leads the defense with 71 total stops, including 12 solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Will Knight has posted a team-high 4.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks this season, along with five QB hurries. Will Mahmud has picked off a team-high two passes and recorded a forced fumble.
National Top-25 Polls:
North Central (Ill.), Mount Union and Johns Hopkins still remain at the Top three teams in Division III this season, according to the D3football.com and Amercian Football Coaches Association (AFCA) polls. Bethel (Minn.) checked in at No. 4 this week in the
d3football.com poll while Salisbury fell one spot to No. 5. The Sea Gulls remained as the fourth-best team in the AFCA Top 25 with Hardin-Simmons rounding out the top five teams.
National Statistical Rankings:
The Generals' offense ranks in the top five nationally in three categories this season. They rank third in Division III in time of possession, holding the ball for an average of 34:54 per game through eight weeks. W&L's offensive line has done an excellent job protecting quarterback Ty Collins, allowing only three sacks (0.43 per game)—a mark that ranks fourth in the country. Their run-heavy triple-option attack is also among the elite, currently ranking as the fifth-best rushing unit in the nation, averaging 273.4 rushing yards per game.
On the defensive side, Brennan Stout ranks tenth in Division III this season in total tackles, averaging 11.8 per game. This marks the second-straight season that a Generals' linebacker has ranked within the Top Ten in tackles, as Jalen Todd '25 was also among the nation's best last season.
Around the ODAC:
This week's four winning programs have separated atop the ODAC standings led by nationally 23rd-ranked Randolph-Macon with its sixth straight victory to improve to 6-0 in league games and 7-1 overall through Week Eight. The Yellow Jackets earned a 47-7 win at Gallaudet marking their third straight and fourth overall game with at least 40 points. Hampden-Sydney, Shenandoah, and Washington and Lee are each tied at 4-1 in league outings following wins this week. The Tigers returned home for a 35-10 triumph over Roanoke, while the Hornets also enjoyed their own venue with a 48-3 win over Averett. The Generals made their home fans sweat with a 20-17 victory in the first overtime period over Bridgewater.
