LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University football team makes their first road trip of the 2026 season on Saturday evening as they travel up I-81 to Gettysburg, Pa. for a 6 p.m. match up against Gettysburg College.

Series History: The Generals and Bullets will meet for the fourth time in program history and the first time since 1981. Gettysburg holds a 3-1 record over the Blue and White, winning the last three match ups in 1981, 1980 and 1977. The Generals won the first meeting 28-20 in Lexington on Nov. 13, 1976.
Scouting the Bullets: Gettysburg heads into Week 2 with a 1-0 record after opening the season with a 24-7 win over Juniata College on Thursday, Sept. 3, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. The Bullets held the Eagles scoreless through the first three quarters before Juniata's Ivan Foreman broke free for a 98-yard touchdown run, cutting the Gettysburg lead to 21-7 with 5:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Bullets controlled possession for more than 34 minutes and produced 330 yards of total offense. Gettysburg rushed for 127 yards, averaging 3.2 yards per carry, while throwing for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Bullets allowed 304 yards of total offense, including 266 rushing yards, as the Eagles averaged 6.3 yards per carry.
Quarterback Sean Clark completed 17 of 29 passes (58.6%) for 203 yards and two touchdowns while adding 29 yards on the ground. Alex Pavic led the rushing attack with 46 yards on 16 carries, while Carson Shoffner rushed 10 times for 40 yards and a touchdown and caught two passes for 43 yards. Gabriel Diaz paced the receiving corps with six catches for 64 yards, while Shane Donoghue and Danny Bonato each hauled in a touchdown pass.
Justin Bardo led the Gettysburg defense with 12 tackles, including five solo stops and two tackles for loss, while adding an interception. Luke Speicher (1.5), Allen Patterson (1.0) and RJ Weiss (0.5) also recorded tackles for loss, while Mike Bendowski secured the Bullets' second interception of the game.
Scouting the Generals: The Generals opened the season with a win for the first time since 2018, defeating Wittenberg University, 13-7, in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field. After a scoreless first half, the Tigers broke through with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter when Cole Burton connected with Stephen Lauterbach on a 2-yard touchdown pass. Ryan Clemens capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 7.
The Generals' defense stood tall on Wittenberg's overtime possession as Zach Cruet broke up a pass on third-and-4 to force a field goal attempt, which sailed wide right. Facing third-and-5 on W&L's ensuing possession, Ty Collins sprinted to his right and pitched the ball to Marc Geffrard, who dove across the goal line for the game-winning touchdown.
Collins completed 8 of 18 passes (44.4%) for 92 yards while adding 36 rushing yards on seven carries. Clemens paced the Generals' rushing attack with 69 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while Carter Shallcross produced 130 yards of total offense. Shallcross rushed for 63 yards and added 67 receiving yards on 10 total touches.
Brennan Stout led the defense with 18 tackles, including two solo stops and half a tackle for loss. Marcus Canton turned in an impressive first start for the Blue and White, registering 12 tackles, including five solo stops and one tackle for loss, while forcing a fumble. His performance earned him ODAC Defensive Player of the Week and D3football.com Team of the Week honors. Mac Palmer also reached double figures with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, while adding a pass breakup.
National Rankings: D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) released their second national polls of the season following the opening week of action. North Central (Illinois) remained the No. 1 team in the country after defeating then-No. 2 Bethel, 44-21. Wheaton (Illinois) climbed four spots in both polls to No. 2 following a 24-23 win over then-No. 3 Mount Union, sealing the victory with a blocked field goal.
Johns Hopkins moved up one spot to No. 3 in both polls following a nine-point win over Ithaca, while UW-Platteville jumped to No. 4 after a dominant 44-7 victory over Aurora.
The two polls differed at No. 5. Defending national champion UW-River Falls earned the fifth spot in the AFCA poll following a 73-7 season-opening win over Southern Virginia, while Bethel (Minnesota) dropped three spots to No. 5 in the D3football.com poll after its loss to North Central.
