No. 25 Women’s Swimming Falls to No. 12 Carnegie Mellon

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's swimming team dropped their first dual of the season, falling to No. 12 Carnegie Mellon University 178.5-83.5 on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Natatorium.

Sophomore Celia Bredehoeft led the Generals with a pair of event victories in the distance freestyle races, winning both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:53.72) and 500-yard freestyle (5:20.62). W&L collected 13 top-three finishes overall, including strong runner-up efforts from multiple swimmers across all disciplines.

Up Next: Washington and Lee returns to the pool on Friday, October 24th as they welcome the University of Lynchburg. The meet is slated to start at 6 p.m. in the W&L Natatorium.

Notable Performances

  • Julia Connor placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:00.69) and third in the 500 (5:21.38) for a strong distance pairing with Bredehoeft.
  • Peighton Kruzel finished second in both butterfly events — the 200 (2:10.56) and 100 (58.80).
  • Maria Jellig earned second in the 200 backstroke (2:09.71), second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.96), and third in the 100 backstroke (59.79).
  • Amelia Maloof took second in the 50 freestyle (25.02), with Tenra Adams tying for third (25.66).
  • Gabby Clemens placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:00.93), while Marcy Mortimer added a third-place finish in the 200 IM (2:14.96).
  • Both W&L relay teams recorded runner-up finishes — the 200 medley relay (1:50.77) and 200 freestyle relay (1:40.30).
