Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 25 Field Hockey Falls Just Short at No. 17 Shenandoah, 3–2

WINCHESTER, Va. — In a battle of nationally ranked ODAC rivals, the No. 25 Washington and Lee University field hockey team came up just short in a 3–2 loss to No. 17 Shenandoah on Wednesday night at Aikens Stadium. The contest featured three first-quarter goals and remained tightly contested throughout, as both defenses limited opportunities in the second half.

The Generals (8–4, 2–1 ODAC) wasted no time getting on the board, striking at 1:13 when first-year Madeline Lancione finished off a feed from senior Zoe Dolfis to give W&L a 1–0 lead. Shenandoah (10–3, 3–1 ODAC) answered quickly with a goal from Kierney Weigle, assisted by Claudia Lenahan, at 6:17 to tie the game. The Hornets took the lead for good just five minutes later as Lenahan scored on a penalty-corner sequence with assists from Madison Short and Camryn DeLeva.

Lancione struck again in the second quarter, scoring unassisted at 15:54 to pull W&L even at 2–2 before halftime. Both teams battled through a scoreless third quarter, with the Generals generating nine shots and two penalty corners but unable to find the go-ahead goal. The decisive moment came late in the fourth when Short scored off another Lenahan assist at 58:08 to lift the Hornets to the win.

Shenandoah's keeper, Cassidy Alexander turned away 11 of 13 W&L shots on goal. The Generals outshot the Hornets 24–7 and earned a 5–3 edge in penalty corners.
